I was actually kicked out of an online AlAnon support group for this...I refused to refer to God as "HP" so as not to "offend" other non-Christian members.
I explained that referring to God as "HP" is blasphemy, a sin, and insulting to God...and that using the term "HP" would be "creating a false idol". I refused to do it, got kicked out.
Just curious, Christians, what would you have done?

AlAnon is a support group for persons who have an alcoholic loved one...this group did NOT have a problem with say a Buddhist referring to Buddah by name...just Christians referring to God Our Father or Jesus Christ Our Saviour, specifically.
If you wanted to say "Jimminy Cricket" or "Del Monte green bean can" was your "HP" that was OK...just no devoutly open Christian referrals.

You did the right thing. God tells us if we disown Him before men he will disown us. Trying to name Him something other than what He truly is, is wrong on so many levels. It angers me that everyone and everything else is given a platform and a very loud voice but when true christianity is practiced on any scale it's all out war against us. God isnt just a "higher power" He is the highest power. He'll be your strength and defense. Dont forget that.

Hey Jennifer,

i would not refer to God as a HP because that term implies that God is a Higher Power but is not a personal God who can be known. And So it's almost like taking an agnostic stance towards God-- Agnostic acknowledge that there is a higher power but he can't be known.

It's a PC term as to not offend anyone, but personally i would never use that terminology unless perhaps in the context of a religious discussion with someone who did not believe. But personally, it's Jesus, it's my Lord, and i'm glad that you are standing firm and not compromising.

Blessings,

Nickster

God goes by many names and you are being overly sensitive. Actually the AlAnon group is being absurdly condescending to the others, because God is a universally recognized term with the exception of a few atheists.

Well, considering the words "God" and "Lord" (as well as "the Almighty", "Christ", "Messiah", and a host of others) are titles that are only used because speaking the name of God is (or was considered) blasphemy, I can't see there being any objection to using the honorific "higher power". If using the phrase "higher power" truly bothers you, then substitue "highest power"; for (at least in your religion), the highest power is the Lord your God.

Interesting. Be true to who you are. Before all the big drive to separate church from state,i already referred to God by many names(big G,Father,Lord etc..).Since as a Christian i acknowledge God as all powerful doesn't higher power fit as well?? If you you believe that God is the one and only, the name doesn't matter(no Satan,Lucifer etc..) I personally think that it should be for either. Peace.

Y-E-S! yes! i was born in a strict Christian family. i pray 1 hour and study the bible for 1 hour each day. On Sunday it's for 7 hours of praying and Bible study. (No joke!) i would never call God anything that is blasphemy towards him. HP, man, they're playing games. i will not call God, some sort of machine.

God never gave himself the name God....he simply said "I am" does it really matter what you call him...he knows who he is.
I can't say that I agree with the "PC" (politically correct) AlAnon group. In fact I hate all things "PC" We might as well be living a world much like Orwell's "1984".

I work with our local Highschool Christian club and we can't use the word Jesus in the school. We ussually use the term, my Best Friend.

A higher power just means some one who is higher than you.
And if I am not mistaken Jesus is higher than myself so therefore I can refer to him as a Higher Power. It wouldn't offend me, because I know in whom I have believed.

No that is offensive and derogatory. HP is a very delicious sauce and much better than your imaginary god. Say no to jesus
