This has happened with both my printers over the years, and my Mum has had the same problem with hers at home and at work. Why doesn't cancel mean cancel. Why does stuff we don't want keep coming back to haunt us?
Or is it just us...

The printer has it own memory, so what is stored in it will print. You only stop the new information from printing by cancel. You will need to go into the printer properties, check pause then cancel to stop it in its tracks, don't forget to un pause the printer before you close the window.
Good luck!

Printers have their own memory nowadays, and the connection to them (USB, usually) is fast enough that the pages will make it to the printer before you have a chance to cancel them.
What I do is pull the printer cable and then cancel the print job in the software.

because almost all printers have something called buffer, or printer memory, which takes the files to be printed from the PC and save it inside the printer, thus if you don't want to print any more, turn off your printer, then cancel the job then turn it on back.

If it's in the queue to print then whatever is in there to the point you push cancel still prints. It's a buffer built into the printer

You don't catch it on time. It travels at the speed of light. Next time, pause it, then cancel the print job. That should stop it from printing, but you have to be quick.
