Am considering purchase of A100 and am trying to decide whetehr to get the lens kit. The lens by itself retails for US $199. I am new to DSLR's and do not currently have any lenses. Can you get KM's on the cheap these days?

Here are the specs from the Sony website:

SAL1870 DT18-70mm F3.5-5.6 Lens Features:

DT Lens Design:
A more compact, lightweight lens designed specifically for the APS-size CCD imager used in the Sony® α (alpha) DSLR-A100 camera.

Aspherical Lens Elements:
To correct visual aberrations at wide-angle setting, enabling a lightweight lens to capture more visually accurate wide-angle shots.

ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass:
To reduce chromatic aberration at telephoto extension, correcting certain wavelengths of light for sharp, clear images with well defined colors.

Circular Aperture:
Because aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.

There could be 2 reasons not to get it:
* You plan on getting something like an 18-200mm for convenience. In this case, the 18-70 would be redundant - even at $100, it's not good enough to justify buying one seperately.
* You'd rather have a better lens in the 18-70mm range. Even for the retail price of $199, don't expect great image quality. I personally use a Nikon D200 (also with a 10MP Sony sensor), and I can assure you, a $200 zoom will not do this sensor justice.
