When flying, I often hear chimes in different pitches and combinations and so on. What do these chimes mean?

1.1 chime Flight attendant is about to make an announcement
2. Multiple chimes means fasten your seatbelt. The seatbelt sign flashes as well.
3. 1 chime may also mean a passenger has pressed the flight attendant call button.

Besides the seatbelts and sitting down, whenever somebody pushes the button to call the flight attendant there's a chime. Depending on what type of plane it is, the chime will continue until the flight attendant walks back and pushes the button again.

they usually go along with the seatbelt sign going on and off. there is also a certain chime that calls the flight attendants to their positions

along with the other answers, the pilot will ring the seatbelt chimes on approach to let the flight attendants to ready the cabin for landing, usually after the pilot gets clearance for landing.

2 chimes means you should put on your seatbelts.
3 chimes means you should put your head between your legs and kiss your asss goodbye.
