Why can't you live the the rules in the bible? If everyone lived by the commandments in the bible wouldn't the world be a better place. There would be no wars, no cheating on people, no killing, etc. What do you think is so wrong with the commandments?

The bible doesn't decide how people act.

I am a very good, decent person. I give, help and offer advice to all those who need it. I never pick on them, or steal, or hurt others. I am an atheist. I don't need the bible to tell me how I should be. I am a good person because I want to be, and I know that it is the right thing to do. From your question it makes me think you feel that all Athiest (and other religions) are just primitive animals that kill others for fun.

I have met many other Christians who
lie
cheat
steal
kill
have adulteries and affairs
etc.
I have seen a man in prison gripping a Bible. When he got released, he killed a man 2 weeks later, but he was still a very devoted Christian.

Just because they say they are a devout Christian while still doing these things, do they have a better shot at getting into heaven (if it exists) than I do? Yeah that makes sense.

One of my favorite examples for your argument my dear, is The Crusades. Where Christians brutally slaughtered the Muslims and actually ATE some of them (in a war that was started by the Christians btw). That doesn't seem very Christian now does it?

Why do you point your finger at non-believers only? Lots of so-called Christians don't live by what the Bible has to say. Try to change them first before you try to change others. Why do you need a Bible to teach you what is right and wrong? Many religious texts teach the same thing. Then maybe we should follow all of them. The Bible is full of wars and cheating and killing and angry God and all that. Christians are fighting Christians...what about that? Open your eyes and live in the world than living in some daydreamt world.

The rules of the Bible have not been very effective in obtaining a good quality of life. Pat Robertson claims to be a good Christian who follows the teachings of the Bible yet he advocated murdering a legitimately elected president and stealing the countries oil. Christians are no less likely to commit crimes than anyone else. Statistics indicate that Evangelical Christians are just as likely to obtain abortions as the general population in the US.
The ten commandments are not nearly as effective a guideline as Local, state and federal law. If we followed the United Nations resolutions the world would be a far better place.

If you haven't noticed, it's mostly the Christian folk who break the commandments. Who's leading the war right now? The Christian conservatives. Stop being so naive.

Later: justmyopinion's email to me (because he had to let someone know he was a tad bit upset):
"Christians are leading a war? Do you mean the war on terrorism between Israel and Lebanon, you are a liar or very ignorant if you think that has anything to do with Christians. You are not in the least aware of the millions of Christians world wide working to help the hungry and needy, why don't you research and offer reasonable answers instead of blatant lies."

Boohoo, someone said something bad about Christians. Nothing new. I'm sorry, but did you forget who our president is? Yup, ole' Sunday School Dubya.

I do live according to most of the commandments. Only that I do so, for very different reasons. I mean, there's a parliamentary LAW against killing. And there's a moral issue against killing. So, that's why I don't kill. Not just because a fairy tale book tells me not to.

On the other hand, other religious teachings are straightforwardly stupid and brainwashing, and I am most definitely not going to live by them. I mean basically those concerning sex and "morality" in the prudish way religions take it, and those concerning loving a non-existent hypothesis above all of what IS real (like your family and friends). The world is going to be a MUCH worse and mediocre place if we all lived according to those ridiculous ideas.

You can't.

That's the whole point of the New Testament. This utopic pining for, "Oh, IF ONLY people would obey the law." They can't. You can't. You violate the law every day, probably a number of times. That is the inescapable fact of sin.

You are not living the rules of the bible unless you have sold everything you have and given the money to the poor. You are not living the rules of the bible if you worry about how you look, or what to eat, or whether you might get hurt. We are sinful and can never live up to the law. The only way that will be fixed is when God comes on the Last Day to judge the living and the dead and build his eternal kingdom on earth.

The problem is that the Bible is not clear in many places. One section contradicts another. The Bible has been re-translated and mistranslated and edited so many times it has little likeness to the original. So you can find sections that justify a certain behavior and other sections that directly contradict the same behavior. So then humans interpret the Bible in the way they want to in order to do whatever they want.

Let's take spanking. The Bible clearly talks about beating a child, using a rod of correction. So in other words an errant child is supposed to be beaten with a stick, it's right there in the Bible. In fact in another passage it talks about actually stoning an errant child to death. Now 50 years ago the rod of correction references in the Bible were used to justify all kinds of severe corporal punishment that many would consider child abuse these days. So now Christians are preaching that the rod of correction referred to religious text that used to be rolled up onto rods. They conveniently ignore the fact that one of the rod passages specifically says the word 'beatest' and the historical fact that children living in that time period were routinely beaten.

Then there are several references to killing disobedient children in addition to multiple references to beating them.

So this raises the question, which part of the Bible do you believe? Should we beat our children with a stick or kill them for misbehavior. Even such a basic question of child discipline has multiple contradictory standpoints in the Bible.

There are dozens more issues that one could raise and argue about. This is the inherent flaw and at the same time genius of the Bible. There is something for everyone. Everyone can take a small section of the Bible and use it to justify almost anything.

So it's not as black and white as you might think. You clearly have not read the Bible or you would not be asking this question. But since you obviously don't want to bother reading the Bible I will leave you with this thought. Take a look at the countries that try to weave religious ideology and text right into their laws. Basically take a look at the Middle East. They have a holy book so sacred you can be killed for disrespecting or damaging it. They have based their society on the rules contained in it. Just look at what a horrible mess that part of the world is. You are advocating the same kind of crap for this country. There are millions who do not think like you and do not accept that the Bible is the infallible word of God. Why should those people be forced to submit to these rules?

Well, the rules of the Bible that refer to God don't make sense to me as I don't believe in God. And then there's the fact that even believers don't always live by the rules of the Bible because no one's perfect. Some of the commandments are OK, but not all of them.

Believers do not even live by the rules of the commandments. Is that not why you got to church. Ask for forgiveness of your sins? For breaking what the bible says wrong? That is a false.statement. You cannot blame everything on people who do not follow the bible. People who try to follow the bible are just as bad.

We all sin... even if we do belive in the Bible. It doesn't matter.. none of us are perfect. And even if the non believers don't follow the Ten Commandments that doesn't mean that they don't have morals.

Plus, not eveyone is a Christian so why would they read the Bible? Think about it.
