I have recently started flying a lot and feel cmfortable removing my shoes while seated. However I am concerned whether this is proper etiquette. My feet, socks and shoes are all clean and odorless.

no it is not.
Aeroplanes didn't exist when chivalry was conceived.

But actually removing your shoes to alleviate anxiety about flying and Jet Lag - really does work, for me and everyone I've spoken to who have flown on airliners.

Except that it is up to you - its a choice. Because I used to work as a flight attendant and then as a ground support crew person for the Airlines. You might like to NOT know that they NEVER clean the rugs on aeroplanes. If you're going to fly check the schedules and try to fly on a newer aircraft. Older planes have older spills and accidents that are only tidied with air frensheners and sprays, almost never cleaned up.

That is why the rugs are always Black or Navy Blue or a Very Dark Brown.

Hell yeah it is rude to remove shoes in an airplane. Even thought u think your feet doesn't stinks doesn't mean other people think the same way. Second, if there's an emergency, u will cause problem to yourself and others as well. The best time to take off your shoes and whatever u feel like taking off is in your own private place (area), never in PUBLIC!!!!

That's a tough one. I think that if you have socks on, you are ok. But bare feet, definitely not.

As long as odor isnt escaping from your feet, I dont see why you couldnt remove your shoes for a more comfortable flight. However, I think that if the flight is an hour or less, it is unnecessary.

In my experience, it isn't rude. Of course, I've taken a lot of 11-hour flights which would have been insufferable if one kept one's shoes one the entire time. Since your feet are odorless, I'm sure it won't matter anyway. Actually, I doubt anyone will notice at all.

It's not recommended. If something happens and you have to exit the plane in a hurry everyone will be stuck behind you while you are putting your shoes back on (supposedly).

I was on a long flight from Texas to Alaska and the guy across the isle from me took his shoes off and socks and then propped his feet up on the wall (we were sitting in the first row behind 1st class, the emergency exit row). I was totally disgusted. Just because you can't smell your feet doesn't mean others can't.

As long as you have clean socks and non-smelly feet it should not be a problem. I always remove my shoes while flying and so do most of the people around me.

I cannot believe how many people seem to think this is ok. This is incredibly rude. Would you take your shoes off in a restaurant? What about during a board meeting? I suggest that you plan ahead with comfortable shoes instead. One man's "clean and odorless" is another man's "PU".

I think it's rude because it's unsanitary. As we've just heard on the news, we carry dangerous germs and bacteria on our shoes, socks and feet and that's a perfect way to not only spread them but pick them up your own feet. It's very tacky and lacking in class to remove your shoes in any public area unless necessary.
Going shoeless should be saved for recreational events.

No, it is not rude...I always bring a pair of thick socks to slip on after I remove my shoes...especially on long flights. Some airlines (like Iberia) even provide free socks so you can take your shoes off. Just make sure your feet don't stink! :)

As long as they are clean and odorless, you should be fine! Planes are terribly uncomfortable and I myself take my shoes of, especially in long trips.

I sincerely do not think it is a lack of proper etiquette, as long as you keep them on the floor..
;)
