My school apartment has no central light fixture in the living room and I like rooms well lit. What are some good lamps/light bulbs I can buy to light up the room? Links? Much appreciated.

Brightest and cheapest per watt would be one of those 300-watt floor lamps with a halogen bulb. Shaped like a wok on top of a stick, there are many styles and colors. About 5 to 6 feet tall. Some come with a foot-pressure switch, most have a switch on the pole.

They throw so much light up and it will bounce off the the entire ceiling, you'll actually getting better lighting with less shadows than if there were a central ceiling fixture. It will take up about 1 square foot of floor space and room space somewhere along the walls.

About $40 at Wal-mart, I'd guess. It's a heavy box (because of the weight in the base), so take the bus, don't hoof it home for miles.
