CHICAGO (AP) Immigration activists around the country are taking up the cause of a single mother who invoked the ancient principle of sanctuary and took refuge in a Chicago church rather than submit to deportation to Mexico.

Elvira Arellano, 31, was holed up for a second day Wednesday at Aldalberto United Methodist Church with the support of the congregation's pastor. With her was her 7-year-old son, Saul, an American citizen.

Federal officials said there is no right to sanctuary in a church under U.S. law and nothing to prevent them from arresting her. But they would not say exactly what they planned to do, or when.

The protest raised the spectacle of agents barging into a church and dragging her out.

I think they should allow her to leave voluntarilly with her son. Because her son is a citizen, to deport her would mean that she could not come legally for 10 years, making him, either leave his country for 10 years, or stay with foster care.

She broke the law. She needs to go. She can take her anchor baby with her.

Commit the crime--do the time. Every action has consequences. She should have thought them through before coming illegally to America and having a child when her future was not secure.

Children pay for the parent's bad choices every day, all over the world. It's sad, but it is a fact of life. She doesn't get a pass on her bad choices simply because she has become a headline.

She is a criminal, shes been deported once before but snuck back in and had a child, she was using someones or a made up fake social security number to work as a cleaning lady at the airport. Her activism was very self generated as it championed the case for illegals with so called anchor babies be allowed to stay in the Us instead of being deported.Shes a schemer and she got caught as most people that commit crimes do.She should be in jail for not just being illegal but for the fraudulent use of the SS#........Why, because she is Mexican, should she be rewarded for committing a crime .You people that blindly support people like this have a twisted view of the law.If people riot or demonstrate when they take her lying *** to jail then arrest them too, there needs to be a stand against people that flaunt the laws of this country and then holler racism.

I think this woman is mentally unsound based on her statements she really needs a mental evaluation. At a place she worked she wrote the employer a letter demanding better wages and benefits for Latina workers only. From all these people at that church not one member has stepped forward to say we'll take care of the child in the event she is sent back to Mexico not one person. She is a common criminal whose past has caught up with her she refuses to accept the consequences of her actions.

absolutely not i don't understand these ppl that break our laws to come here but then expect the rights that our laws provide you can't have it both ways if you break the law to come you should have no rights (other than basic human rights I'm not that cold hearted) and she should be sent home and her kid to just because he was born here he shouldn't have the right to stay if he is the child of an illegal he should be considered one as well i mean can't they immigrate legally our country allows over 1.5 million legal immigrants from Mexico per year follow the law and the law will be on your side. My grandparents came here legally they followed the rules why should we now bend over backward for these ppl....yeah yeah yeah they are just trying to make a better life for themselves but i fail to see how that is our problem ppl make better lives for themselves every day in Mexico and all over the world or they can come here legally...enough with the bleeding hearts if we don't' stop this now our country will be in turmoil...look at every other country in the world they limit the number of immigrants well so do we we just don't enforce our laws the way we should. I'm sure your not going to like my answer but you should at least consider the other side of these situations.

An illegal alien, who's already been deported once, sneaking back illegally through the border and working with a false SSN? Who decided to have an anchor baby here when she snuck back last time? That woman is not a martyr, she's a manipulator ... sanctuary in a church and being holier than thou ... amazing how lawbreakers always manage to find some bleeding hearts to give them succour when they've been caught in the act ... Give me a break!! Get her out of here!!

Lock her up.. She stole a SS# and broke other laws in this country. Then deport her.As for her son , she wasn't thinking about him before she had him in fact it seems her only purpose for having him was so she could stay here.. So let him stay with a family friend or legal family member , all she has to do is give them custody unless of course she wants to continue using him for sympathy on the hopes of being given legal status... Get Her Outta here.........

do you think the thought ever occurred to her that the fact that she will be deported IS the will of GOD? This woman was deported once before, is a convicted felon, and was working in a place where national security is paramount. She will get deported and those illegals who support her will be going too.

Not barging into the church is just stupid. Thats sending a message to all criminals out there to hide in the church.
