Depends on a lot of factors. Spend some time online or in the library reading up on pets. Links below for help.

Be sure to consider:
How much time you have for the dog. - some are more needy than others.
How big your house and yard are - some dogs need more room to run than others.
How old your kids are - for yonger kids be sure to get one that is gentile and forgiving.
How active a pet you want - some are active and like to run a lot. Others more docile.
What you want the dog to do - some retrieve, some catch frisbees, some herd(kids other pets), other just hang out.

Once you have a dog breed you like look online for a rescue for that type of dog. You can then go visit the dogs and pick out one that fits your lifestyle. You could even narrow it down to a few breeds and go visit several rescues.

Go online to petfinder.com and look for a young adult dog that is good with kids. You can avoid housebreaking, you are basically guaranteed the dog's disposition around family/children and to top it off you get a dog who will be indebted to you for the rest of its life. Adoption/Rescue is the best way to go. Puppies are a LOT of work, and if your family doesn't do it (even though they PROMISE to), you're the one stuck picking up the poop.

Your kids are not going to care if the dog is a puppy or if its 3 years old. You will care when a puppy (rescued or otherwise) chews up the remote control or any of your furniture.

I would have to say a lab or retriever. Both of them can be protective if someones at the house, but they can also be very gentle. Also, if you are planning on an inside dog, labs don't shed that much because they have pretty short fur. Well, hope you find the right dog. :-)

Black Lab or a Black Lab Mix. Smartest and most reliable dogs I have ever come across. I had a black lab/shepherd mix and he was the coolest dog. He was easy to train and a great protector and companion.

A Pom-Poo (half Pomeranian-half Poodle). They don't shed, they rarely bark, they are very smart and easy to potty train and teach tricks. They are fairly smaller and grow to weigh about 20 pounds or so. They adapt to your family in every way. If your family is more laid back....they will be laid back. If your more active....they will be active also.

Well there's many kinds. Golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, Beagles, Maltese, Chihuahuas... many more I guess. It's really up to what kind of dog you want, big or small.
