I'm 22- a female and in college with a part-time job! I could afford around a $250-$300 car payment. I want a newer car with leather and a sunroof...but what kind of car would you suggest I get? It probably will be used but I'm just wondering what people would suggest?

Get yourself a Ford Focus ZTW. This is the Wagon version with Leather seats power stuff etc... Get a Wagon because it will have plenty of room to haul stuff as you move around in life. The good news? A good used Ford Focus Wagon in good shape can be bought for 5-7000 How much cash do you have???

You REALLY should not take on a car payment while you are a student working just part time. If you have a 300.00 payment...plus insurance...plus liscencing...plus gas...Oil changes...brakes...tires... repairs... you would be spending 5-600 month on transportation! Half of your money would be going to the car!

A better plan would be to take what little cash you have, and go buy a cheap Escort or something that you can pay for...and then take that xtra $300/month or so and put it into a savings account. When you have enough money saved up...plus the value of your current car...then you can go pay cash for a nicer car! After you graduate and get a decent job, you will be able to save more cash quickly and move up in car quickly...Dont rush it...just drive an old hoopty for now.

Besides...if you take on a car payment...how much is that going to cut into the Pizza/Beer Fund??? Do you really want to have to cut back on Socialization(which can hurt future job contacts) so that you can drive a better car before you can REALLY afford to pay for it?!?!

They Ride Better when Paid For!

I bought a nice '97 Camaro about 4 years ago off a lot for $2,500. It needed a little work, like a new window motor and some little stuff like that, but it was a good car, and kool, too. I wrecked it last year when I got hit by a crazy truck driver. Price of cars vary everywhere you go. Down south they're cheaper, and rust free. Fort Wayne, Indiana has a lot of cheap cars because there are so many used car lots. The more the competition, the better the price. Check the paper, check Craigslist, even check ebay. There are lots of great deals out there. And remember, the price is always negotiable!

You should definitely get a used car. Unless you have loads of money to throw away, it is always better to buy used because the value goes down so quickly.

While you are in college and only have a part-time job you should really get a basic vehicle... something with low mileage that is good on gas. Keep your payments as low as possible. Believe me... when you get out of college and start your career, you'll be ready for a new car. Until then, scale it down and get something you can pay off quicker than you would for a more expensive modeal that you will be paying on for 5 years. Money and the lack thereof can be very stressful, so while you are in college keep it simple.

Good luck!

Seriously I don't think you want a newer car until your out of college. For a lot of reasons, but better to wait until you have a better job to afford the payment.

You can get a great used car for under $10,000, even under $5,000. I personally would get something extremely reliable and versatile. I like Toyota the best for reliability and less problems, but Subarus make a great car for a college student... Subarus are versatile and had all wheel drive, Big enough to carry 4 and a bunch of stuff and not bad on gas

Honda Civic, or Toyota Corolla
Great mileage, practically maintenence free!
or maybe you can check out the new Toyota Yaris Liftback or the Sedan both are nice and the liftback starts at $11000 and the sedan is $11,900 I feel it is a great pricing! Also they give good mileage the manual transmission gives you a 34/40 MPG and the Auto transmission gives you 34/39 MPG!

You would want something good looking and dependable,
and economical on gas and cheap on upkeep.
Saturn has a great small car and it looks pretty flashy, also a Honda is a very dependable car.A Kia is cute and inexpensive. If your credit is good you are better to buy a new car with a warranty than a used one.Payments depend on how much you put down and your credit score.good luck and don't forget how high insurance is in your age group...

A Mazda3 hatchback. A hatchback is perfect for college students as there is a lot of room under the hatch for moving your (or a friend's) possessions. The Mazda3 is very sporty, fun to drive and gets great gas mileage. It has also been reliable. You might be able to swing a new one on your budget but could also consider a 2005.

Small and inexpensive, but reliable. You really don't want a high car payment while you're in school. you want to start out with the least amount of debt as possible. Once you graduate and get that dream job, you can easily afford that dream car.
