There are scams upon scams in this area. There is only one actual site for getting your free, by law, yearly credit report and you should never have to enter any financial data of any kind. If you do, you entered the wrong site address.

If you're concerned about finding the right one, go to the FTC's site at http://www.ftc.gov. They have a link to the one and only correct page (which I've also included below).

There's only ONE site you can get a free credit report for each of the 3 credit bureaus once a year, and that's www.annualcreditreport.com.
Yes, you're allowed to get a free report every year. However, that doesn't mean FreeCreditReport lets you use their services for free each year! I bet when you signed up you reused the same information from 2005 and tried to re-register. If that's true, you already used up your free 30 days, now pay up, cancel and move on.
Learn to read the fine print!
Also FreeCreditReport.com has information about and a link to annunalcreditreport.com on the left side of the screen.

Just get your reports direct from transunion, experian and equifax. They all have websites and they are easy to use. Why use an intermediary when you can go right to the source?

Their are more credit scams out there than you can shake a stick at. Think twice before you use any third party fancy pants websites or credit counciling services. A lot of them are scams.

You do a lot of the work on your own, just give your self the time and education you need to find out what you have to do. Here are some good sites:

www.scambusters.org
www.bankrate.com
www.about.com

Good luck.

You did not go to the OFFICIAL web page. There ARE A LOT of places trying to cash in on people looking at their credit report. This is the OFFICIAL government page. There is NO FEE and you are offered ONE free report each year for each bureau. DO NOT use those other memberships...so go to the link provided and you will be able to access your report (and book mark the page) They have not done a good job of advertising this page because the credit bureaus still want their money.

No, I didn't know that. Probably best to go to the actual credit report sites and request your report. Your right you are entitled to one free credit report per year from all three credit reporting agencies. I think the credit companies charge for doing the same work for you and being so called "watch dogs" It is a line of bull crap!

THE ONLY PLACE WHERE YOU CAN GET FREE CREDIT REPORTS IS http://www.annualcreditreport.com/

All of the other sites sell you a reporting service. They give you a free report if you PAY FOR THEIR SERVICE. Don't be tricked by site names. The above site is the site that the Federal Trade Commission site links to. You can get a free report yearly from each of the 3 reporting agencies.

They will try to sell you your credit score. That will cost extra.

You could get the free credit report for all three major credit agencies once ever 12 months. So if you get the same one in September of 2005 and get one with the same company in July 2006, they have the right to charge you. Also, getting your credit report is not the same as getting your score. The score you have to pay for. I try to get one from each of the agencies once every 4 months so I could spread it out.

Also, the url for is www.freecreditreport.com, credit-report.com.

If a credit report site asks you for payment info (credit card number), they are going to charge you. That should have been a clue.

I used their web site last year but at the end there was a charge without any way to make sure it was free, so I did it by phone instead from this site: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/helpcu

You are right, but you can get a free report in the mail. Everything on the internet is a lie or scram.
