Actually any urine smells that way. Have you ever had the occasion to visit a nursing home?
We have a great system for ridding our environment of the smells of our waste. The litterbox is the only way for a cat. Don't blame the cat.
When I volunteered at a shelter years ago I could always tell if we had an unneutered male on the premises. You smelled it the moment you went through the door. There urine is particularly pungent!

Cat's urine reeks because the entire cat reeks... cat's are nasty and smelly. The only good thing they have is that they go pee/poo in the same spot all the time... and not all cats do btw... yuck!

Unneutered male cats or tom cats so have extremely strong smelling urine. Once their neutered though, it's better but it will still stink really bad. They do that so as to mark their territory such as spraying on a sofa means that he's claiming it as his own. My cat pretty much treats my whole bedroom as his "own".

I agree they are very strong smelling. There is a new product called "Urine Away" or "Urine Off" or something like that. I haven't tried it but maybe that would help remove the smell.

if it's a male cat that hasn't been neutered that's the reason. He's still got all the horomones flowing through him. If it's a female or a neutered male then they might have a UTI or another urinary tract problem.

Lol, ya know; female cats love that. It drives them wild. Lol, they probably smell us and go ooooh.
