there's an illness called kennel cough, perhaps he has it?
Kennel cough or tracheobronchitis is a highly contagious canine illness characterized by inflammation of the upper respiratory system. It can be caused by viral infections such as canine distemper, canine adenovirus, or canine parainfluenza virus, or bacterial infections such as Bordetella bronchiseptica.[1] It is so named because the infection can spread quickly among dogs, such as in the close quarters of a kennel.
Infection
Both viral and bacterial causes of kennel cough are spread through the air by infected dogs sneezing and coughing. It can also spread through contact with contaminated surfaces and through direct contact. It is highly contagious. Exposure occurs in environments where there are other dogs in proximity, such as kennels, dog shows, and groomers. Symptoms begin usually 3 to 5 days after exposure.[1] The disease can progress to pneumonia.
Symptoms can include a harsh, dry hacking/coughing, retching, or gagging, especially in response to light pressing of the trachea. The presence of a fever varies from case to case. The disease can last from 10-20 days. Diagnosis is made by seeing these symptoms and having a history of exposure.
Treatment and prevention
Antibiotics are given to treat any bacterial infection present. Cough suppressants are used if the cough is not productive (nothing is being coughed up). The prognosis is good. Prevention is by vaccinating for canine adenovirus, distemper, parainfluenza, and Bordetella. In kennels, the best prevention is to keep all the cages disinfected. Most kennels will not board dogs without proof of vaccination

Coughs are not usual for dogs. Has he been to the vet? It could be no more than a cold, but usually it is more serious. Parvo or Kennel cough or worse Heart worms. A congental heart condition can also be the cause.
If the cough sounds croupy, it may be kennel cough. Has he been around strange dogs? or boarded. Or even been to a groomer latley? Do you give him heart worm medicine? It is essential to have him checked out for this condition. It is usually fatal. Didn't mean to scare you but a vet can tell more. Good luck.

it could be that he has kennel cough which is spread from dog to dog and from you to the dog. has the dog been at a kennel recently or has he been at a dog show or around any dogs for that matter. you can treat it but it is time consuming but worth the time to get rid of it. i work at a boarding kennel and i see it all the time people not vacinating thei dogs for this disease. when we get a dog that comes down with this we take the precautions and sterilize all the thigs that dog used and we use bleach in a bucket to step in before we go in his kennel and before we go to the other kennels.. i would say go get him checked before it gets worse. good luck

Yes dogs cough. My dog coughs all the time. Sometimes he does it after he drinks water really fast or when he is eating. It is normal, they might just have a hair ball in their throat, like cats. So yes it is normal.

Dogs do cough in response to allergies, constricted trachea, heartworm, polluted air, virus known as 'kennel cough'; heart disease, and many other reasons.
If your dog continues to cough, he/she should see the vet..as most of the reasons are treatable.
