There is no singular formula for all cars. Modern cars with the computer controll systems continuously make adjustments to the performance which can impact fuel consumption.

Also, not all vehicles are geared the same. As a rule of thumb, the higher the RPM of the engine, the more fuel used. Say your vehicle runs at 2900 RPM at 45mph but 1800 RPM at 55mph and 2900 RPM at 65mph. Generally you would expect the lowest fuel consumption at 55mph and the same fuel consumption at 45mph and 65mph. I had a car that got 35 miles per gallon in town with lots of stops and starts, but only 28 miles per gallon at 70mph!

The best way to track an average fuel consumption is to fill your tank with gas, letting the nozzle shut it off automatically. Record your starting mileage. Drive for a period of time. Fill your tank with gas the same way as before and make note of the gallons that you've put into the tank. Record the mileage at this fuel-up.

Subtract the second fuel-up mileage (odometer reading) from the starting mileage. This gives you the distance travelled. Please note most modern cars have a trip odometer that you can reset at the starting fill-up. This makes tracking miles travelled much easier.

Divide the distance travelled by the amount of fuel added to the tank during the second fueling. This gives you the average miles per gallon of fuel.

How many miles did you drive ?
How many gallons of gas did you use ?
100 miles divided by 10 gallons = 10 miles per gallon...
Was that a trick question ?
