I'm an Agnostic, but I was raised a Christian. For the first part of my life, I truly believed, untill I came to realize that Christianity was not meeting my speritual needs and began to search widely for something that would. I still haven't found any one religion that would meet my needs, but I have gained better speritual awareness.

I have read the bible. More than once. It seems to me to be full of contradictions, fallacy, and plenty of fodder for spreading hate. I have gone to Christian churches and considered myself, at one time, a Christian. But every time I try to challange Christian dogma or make some sort of point, all I hear is "Read the bible, then you'll understand!" or "You know nothing about Christians!"

Why do people make these assumptions?

Because you disagree with them. They think there is only one way to know the Bible, and if you don't see it their way you must be wrong and should read the Bible again. It's just their way of putting the ignorance on you without actually answering the question.

This is often the short cut we would give, probably because we sense (or we think we sense) that your challenges would do nothing more than turn into a shouting match, or because the people you ask don't want to personally help you in finding the way.

As for the underlying issue, I can't exactly help you without knowing the underlying issues behind your leaving Christianity or your background and the churches you've been to. It is good that you are seeking for the right way, and I think it would be more productive to pray to God (not necessarily the God of what denomination you come from, just the God who answers your prayer) that you will find the way. It is not an easy path, and the first answer you find is not necessarily the right one, but don't lose hope and keep seeking...

I really don't know why these people make that assumption. I get the same thing all the time. Even though I've read the bible several times at different stages in my life and have also found it to be nothing more than contradictory fiction with tales full of how to hate.

I'm just wondering if you have ever asked a pastor/minister questions that you don't understand or contradict itself?

The Bible is a source of guide and strength for many christians. I am also a pentecostal christian and i use the Bilble as reference for my daily living. People make these assumptions because the Bible is their source for their answers. You believe that christianity is a "bed of roses" but this is not always the case. Do not let some people "screw" up your mind. Istill believe you still have some christian faith in you.

I've had a similar experience as you. Keep in mind that for many of the people who tell you these things, they believe that the bible is the infallible truth, and so they honestly believe that if you would read it, you too would see that infallible truth. Obviously, you came to a different conclusion in reading the bible, but it is hard to understand that people can experience the same event and come away with completely different perceptions.

You just have to get beyond the point that being judged matters to you. I'm finally doing that, and its taken a lifetime. We all have a right to our own opinion. "Taking it on faith" is like taking it on thin air. Remember the Golden Rule, and practice it from your heart. When all is said and done, thats what matters. PS We make all kinds of assumptions because most people are sheep. Been there, done that...no more.

I do believe that you've read the Bible. I just believe that while you were at it, (not trying to insult you, I respect that you of very few atheists, have a brain and actually use it) you didn't have an open mind and you weren't completely seeking the truth. I believe many non-christians know alot about the Christian fiath, look at Satan he knows all about it.

Like I've said before, mainstream Christianity has deteriorated over the centuries (see Joseph Smith--History, verse 19). As a consequence, as Joseph Smith put it (ibid., verse 12, last clause), the Bible just isn't 100% reliable anymore (even though it comes close).
