I'm having trust issues with Veterinary's.

Last night, my Tonkanese started howling, then was panting like crazy. We took him to an after hours veternary. They put him on oxygen and diagnosed him with a possible 'Saddle Thrombus' which is most likly TERMINAL .

We opt to take him home against vet's recomendation of Euthinatia ... he gets a shot of morphine and we take him home, pray, and read him poems ... this mourning, PRAISE BE JESUS, he's walking, eatting, pooping ... Is this a mirricale or bad diagnosis from veternaryian?

So, I call his local vet, and they're amazed that he's walking, let alone roaming about the house (they got a fax from emergency vet) ... Well, both say "Saddle Thrombus" is a common trait in Tonkanese cats ... he could have bad heart, clott, or instead of "Saddle Thrombus", he could have "Nerve Trama" from jumping / landing wrong way.

Ahh ... don't know if it's a mirrical he's alive today, or if vet's are all morrons ...

Anyways ... costs to dertermine disease is around $1,000.00 USD (Ecko cardio gram) ...

How can I shop veternarianies without dragging my Tonkanese cat all over town , and not worrry about a vet prematurly recomending killing him 'cas it's humaine ... *ahem* ... if I would have taken that advice last night, my baby cat would certainly be dead.

Well, things are misdiagnosed quite often- pets can't tell us where it hurts and without diagnostics like radiographs or an MRI, we dont' know. I would look into finding another vet- including an emergency vet. Even if it was a saddle thrombus, he could have been given an anticoagulant to try and dissolve it- does not always work but worth a try. I have never recommended euthanasia until other avenues have been exhausted. Unfortunately, a lot of vets judge for you how much you are willing to pay- they might have had other options but did not talk to you b/c they just assumed you wouldn't go for it.
In order to find a new vet, yes shop around. Ask your neighbors that have cats, call the closest speciality hospital and ask who they get a lot of referrals from in your area, and ask any potential vet what they know about Tokinese. I suggest the speciality for a few different reasons- by referring cases, a veterianarian is saying "I have not encountered this before" or "I don't have the equipment to handle this." Either way, it is actually a good thing because the vet knows their own limits and is more concerned about the welfare of the pet- not keeping your money.

If price doesn't matter, why not go with the Bates? The same design as the Wintec, but leather. Wintec/Bates/Collegent (now all the same company) design their own saddles and really know what they are doing. Show judges tend to not like synthetic saddles as they are not traditional. Really, that is the only reason they have a bad rap. You can get a well designed saddle in leather by buying a Bates or Collegent. These both have good names in the show ring. Ovation on the other hand, simply sends a good quality saddle to India to be copied, and very poorly at that. They do ok with clothes, but as far as saddles go, they are only making a poor copy of a good original. These saddles do not have the balance of the original saddles, and they will put you in an uncomfortable and unbalanced position, as well as likely to make your horse sore due to you being unbalanced. Keep looking if you don't want the Wintec and you somehow think the Ovation is better. add--if price doesn't matter, go with a Pessoa or Barnsby; those are the ones that Ovation copies! They are what many AQHA judges want to look at.

I would say your prayer and your giving him the option of life and not Euthanasia is exactly what healed your special friend.

I practice martial arts and have learned much of the healing arts of the Chinese. Saying is, before you learn to hurt, you must learn to heal.

I use Chi Gung which is a learned art of transmitting Chi energy thru your right hand to your target. I have healed my Maine Coon Tomcat when he got an eye infection that can cause blindness.

Your story has a very happy ending and I have no doubt that your prayer is what healed him. I would say it was a miracle and the vet's are not really morons, it is just that God knows so much more than they could possibly ever imagine.

well, a vet is just like trying to find a good medical doctor for yourself. it might take a few tries to find someone that you trust. i know that in my town, we have a cat clinic which is a vet that specializes in cats. maybe you should take your kitty there...i mean, if you were a child, you'd use a pediatrician, if you were pregnant you'd use a gyno/obtetrician...you get the point. find a specialist. you may pay slightly more but you'll get better accurancy and in the long run, spend less money

its a very tough thing to go through, my kitten was suppost to have the same tests, i had only had her 4 days, she was suffering for all of those days! i had to feed her through an eye dropper ever 2 hours of the day and night...when i took her back to the vet for another evaluation they told me she did not have a URI she had jaundice and wanted to send her home with me but i would have to bring her in everyday for IV fluids...I feel like if i had gotten a second opinion it could have saved her. But like most people we cant spend thousands of dollars and find out that there is no help out there anyways. Take him to 1 other vet and see if they tell you the same thing then go from there. Good Luck!

If it is a thrombus Im amazed to that hes up and walking. And by the way a thombus is a clot. If that is what it was its likely to happen again. Its worth spending the money to have his heart checked out if only to check to see if anythings is in fact wrong and if he needs meds. Spending some $$ now may help prevent something in the future.

Its tough honey, I like a good thrombosis but nerve trauma can be pretty tasty too. So hard to choose. Hmmmmm.... I'll go with thrombosis. Kinda rolls off the tongue don't you think.

Call some of your local pet rescues...(not the shelters) they should be able to give you the name of some good vets in your area. Also talk to friends who have cats and see who they take their cat to.
