Typhoid fever (or enteric fever) is an illness caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi. Common worldwide, it is transmitted by ingestion of food or water contaminated with feces from an infected person.[1] The bacteria then multiply in the blood stream of the infected person and are absorbed into the digestive tract and eliminated with the waste.

Absolutely. Do a web search on "Typhoid Mary" to answer this question with a tragic bit of history. Mary Mallon was a food worker (she worked as a cook) in the early 1900s who was responsible for several outbreaks of typhoid. She was a carrier of typhoid who did not have any obvious symptoms but spread the condition wherever she worked.

A few people can become carriers of S. typhi and continue to shed the bacteria in their feces for years, spreading the disease.
