I am a member of a board and this woman had made a post about her 8 month old daughter who had gotten tangled in her blanked and passed away. This really scared me to hear that happened. I know my daughter is older she is 2 years old but, reading that really scared me and I want to know if I should take away my daughters blanket.

By two (if she has no disabilities), your daughter should be able to get herself untangled if she gets caught in her blankets at night. Just make sure that the bottom is tucked in tight so that it can't get tangled around her. The bed sheets for toddler beds are great, because they come with elastic around the bottom of the top sheet to help hold it on (since little guys wiggle around so much while they sleep). As long as everything is tucked in well, she shouldn't have a problem.

No, that would be overreacting to that tragic event. An 8 month old baby is so incredibly different than a 2 year old! I don't think we even gave our daughter a blanket until she was 1 year old at least. At 2, your daughter is capable enough that if her blanket is giving her problems, she would just move it (or yell loud enough that you would come help her)...an 8 month old does not have that capability, because at that age, they usually are just starting to crawl and do not have very good control over their bodies.

I wouldnt take the blanket away. If it is a knitted blanket or something that could come unraveled then maybe try to find her a new blanket. My daughters blankie is 12inches by 12inches and has no abilty to come loose to tangle her. It has no edging or anything fancy but it comforts her. I suggest you try something like that if you're really concerned. My daughters blankie brand is BabyMe and the one i have is available mail order only and is only $8.

Good Luck!

I provide a 2.5 hour training on safe sleep habits of infants and toddlers. Children under the age of 2 should not sleep with anything in their crib. I believe that your 2 year old will be fine, but if you feel like she may get the blanket too tight around her face and nose, then maybe you should take it away, but I only recommend children under the age of 2 have nothing in their beds. GREAT QUESTION!!!

I would not take the blanket away. Just about every baby and child sleep with blankets. I understand your concern but try not to let things scare you.

I agree with the people that commented before me.

It is very sad that that woman and family lost their child. I'm sorry about that!!

But your daughter is 2! If you want to you can take it away (it won't be pretty ;-p ) If you do I won't give it back to her. Completely!! If you give it back to her later, it will just confuse her!

Either way it sounds like she is doing well and you just needed a little reassurance!

It is your decision, but for what its worth I would leave it be!
