Has anyone ever done this? I'm thinking about that as an activity for a 6yo's birthday party. Does it work?

Sure. It is rather fun and exciting for the kids. You use a coffee can (or plastic bags) to make ice cream.

You can either make small individual portions (so each kid can make their own unique ice cream recipe) or they can take turns helping make a larger batch.

I suggest you practice ahead of time.

Yes. I did this in high school Chemistry class. You get one small tin can of coffee and a larger one (so that the smaller one fits in it). Both of them have to have lids. You put your cream, vanilla, flavorings (chocolate syrup, caramel, cookie chips or fruit) in the small can and close it tight. We sealed it with duct tape around the lid to be extra safe. Then you line the bottom of the larger can with rock salt (buy it next to the salt, or the electric ice cream makers). Place your small can inside the large one and pour the rock salt all around the space between the 2 cans. Don’t be shy, the salt is what gets it nice and frozen. Once that has been done, seal the large can (with the little one inside of course) the same way you sealed the little one. Then, you place your can on the floor and roll it back and forth. It’s gonna get noisy. When we did it, my partner and I sat on the floor with our legs open and rolled it back and forth for a good 10 minutes. Then we repacked it with more rock salt, since they do melt, and rolled another 10 minutes. After wards it was done, and so delicious. I’ve gotten a few of my friends to do it here at work. I would love to find out of you did it and how it turns out with 6 year olds.
