Obviously the more megapixels the better, you will also want to try and get one with optical zoom. You can find some very good deals at http://overstock.com I bought a Mustek there for around $60 and it normally retails for $150. It is a multi function, it takes stills, video with sound and can also be used as a webcam, contrary to what some people think, it is a good camera and I couldn't be happier with it. I bought it to be a "disposable" camera, you incase I dropped it while playing around. It is a great camera until you can afford a more expensive model. I also have an older Fujifilm Finepix A200 I really like it a lot as well.

there is the simple cheap version you can still get in some toy stores, five years ago they used to sell for about eighty dollars in the camera / CD department.
But now, sell for less than twenty. it's only got a 1.1 megapixle range.
Or just get yourself one of those camera phones they sell in the Camera/CD section at Target or Walmart. They are comparable to most camera only digital cameras.

Even the most fancy expensive digital cameras can not take as good pictures, as the cheapest Film cameras, because the technology still hasn't progressed enough to be better than a film useage camera. Maybe in another two or three years, it will get better.
But for now, a camera phone would be fine for you, even if the talk time runs out it can still work as a digital camera, indefinitely.

If you go the brand wise i would say canon. but they are expensive. if you can manage to have $300 you should buy canon A540. It has 6 megapixel or mp. as you have larger mp you get better resolution. 4x optical zoom. optical zoom is you can zoom before you take the picture. i strongly reccomend that you uy a camera w/ atlease 3x optical zoom. and has 4x digital zoom. digital zoom is you can zoom after the picture has been taken. so you have total of 16x zoom. It has auto focus, it focus by it self so you dont have to worry about the focus. Uses SD memory card. cheapest memory card that exist. reccomend to buy 512 mb memory card.It has large LCD screen 2.5". it can record the movies too. it has many modes in it that i cant explain.

If you want to know the meanings of the term just go to wikipedia.com and search for it.

$200 puts u in a good range of cameras. The most important things to know is, at least 3meg & optical zoom. All other factors at that price dont matter.

I bought the Canon PowerShot A430 a few months ago after a lot of research on the web. I love it because it's small and the quality is great. Since then two of my friends that saw it bought it too.

The best place I know of to compare is http://www.dpreview.com.

http://tigerdirect.com

They have everything... and some really fantastic deals. Overstock is OK, but they sell notoriously crappy brands (like Mustek). If you find a camera you like, research it first (search for: "your camera + reviews"), to find out what problems it has.

I bought a Kodak EasyShare from TigerDirect for 50% off retail value. No problems here.
