According to the Smarties website, the manufacturer states, "Our candy is intentionally made in pastel colors so that our customers will be eating more candy and less artificial colors."
So they admit that artificial colors are used in the candy-making process. And, like another answerer noted, Red 40 Lake, Yellow 5 Lake, Blue 2 Lake, and Yellow 6 Lake are used in the Smarties candy.
So, how do they make the purple ones? A combination of blue and red will produce the classic pastel purple color of Smarties.
