"Windows cannot format this disc" - what's wrong - is it the disc? The drive works, as I have other discs that work fine - this is a new batch (golding HD double sided 2MB) Or should i ditch the discs and get the new thing that plugs into the USB port? Any advice gratefully received x

As already mention check they are not write protected (if new this is unlikely). But I did have the same problem as yourself a while back, disk would not format but old disks could be read without a problem.

FYI all HD disks should be 2MB it is just that windows after formatting only allows 1.44MB to be stored on the disk.

The actual problem what that the floppy drive was knackered. They are now used so infrequently that either dust or just old age prevented it from writing to the floppies. So I bought a new one for about £15 and fitted it and all worked OK.

Assuming you don't have the skill to change one or don't whant to pay for a technician then best use a memory stick.

Well. Check to make sure the floppy isnt write-protected. There should be a little nitch at the top (cant remember if its on the right or left side) that can slide up and down to mark it ready only or writable. Try switching that to see if you can format.

I actually use the USB flash drives. They are very handy and can hold a ton more then floppys. Mine is 512mb. A floppy holds 1.44mb or there abouts. So if you think about it, it would be a lot easier to carry a small flash drive then 250 floppy disks!!! a 512mb cost around 20$ if on sale. Smaller memory sizes are even cheaper. Hope this helps!

There is a litlle plastic switch thingy at the bottom left of the floppy, if the label is facing you. That should be in the closed position for formatting.

And yes, nothing wrong with a USB stick, they hold lots more and are getting cheaper by the minute.

Make sure the wee tab at the top of the disk is in the right position - this is incase you wipe the disc accidentally.

make sure the disks arent "write protected" ...on one edge you will find a small "slider" ....slide it across and try again ... if it still wont format maybe the disks are corrupted , or your floppy drive is playing up .

Acccording to my wife you need a 2meg floppy drive .... something I didnt know there aswell !!!!!
