Mormons are Christians with an additional book

2006-08-17 04:59:34 · answer #1 · answered by Quantrill 7 · 0 2

Unlike what Mormons believe about themselves there are many differences. Either they are Christian and the rest of what is called the christian world is not or they aren't and the rest are. They start with believing in a different God. They believe he was once a man like we are now, Christians believe he always has been God. They believe he has a body of flesh and bone, christian believe that He is Spirit. They believe salvation comes by faith and works Christians believe it's ONLY by faith. They deny the existence of hell christians don't... Get the idea? Jim

Mormons are Christians. Mormons belong to the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter-Day Saints. They stick with different regulations in comparison to different sects of Christianity (Catholicism, Lutheran, Baptist, etc.), I propose you purely seem on the hyperlink I provide to work out how they practice their type of Christianity. Be more beneficial particular once you're saying you're "Christian" because like I stated, there are dissimilar Christian sects.

Probably the biggest difference is the concept of a restoration of the gospel.

For example: most people categorize Christians as either being Catholic or Protestant, we say we are neither. We believe as protestants do that there was a great falling away from the gospel as established by Christ in the early christianity, the protestants rebelled against this and did their best to form their own religions according to the teachings of the Bible, we however believe that Christ restored His original gospel on the earth once again, that once again their are 12 apostles and modern-day revelations.

Here are the articles of faith - which are pretty good simplistic explanation of our beliefs:

1We believe in God , the Eternal Father, and in His Son , Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
2 We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression .
3 We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved , by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
4 We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
5 We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy , and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
6 We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
7 We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.
8 We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
9 We believe all that God has revealed , all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
10 We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal gglory .
11 We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience , and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
12 We believe in being subject to kings , presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying , honoring, and sustaining the law .
13 We believe in being bhonest , true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to gendure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

Hope that answers your question - best wishes.

Mormon is a cult with no standing among organized religions. They are not allowed membership in any church councils or organizations.

Pure cult. And definitely not Christian. The Bible is a sealed book and cannot be added to. Read the last chapter of Revelations if you don't believe me.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (of which my husband, children & I are strict practicing members of) believe in a complete restoration of the gospel, complete restoration of the priesthood, the laying on of hands (receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit), God the Father and Christ His son.

The biggest difference is that we believe that families are forever. When our marriage is sealed in the temple (any LDS temple with a temple recommend), we are eternally sealed to our family which means that we will be united with our family in Heaven after we die. Without the sealing taking place, we will see our earthly family but we won't recognize them but when our marriage is sealed in an LDS temple, we will be with our earthly family for all eternity.

The Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, Pearl of Great Price are all extensions of the King James version of the Bible, not in place of the Bible. We do not worship Joseph Smith as some non-Mormons believe. Joseph Smith is the man who received the information from the angel Moroni that he then wrote into a book that is now called The Book of Mormon. Keep in mind that when Joseph Smith wrote The Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith was NOT able to read or write at all.

Most of the writings in the book of Mormon can also be found in the King James Version of the Bible but there are writings in The Book of Mormon that can not be found in the King James Version of the Bible .... such as ancient civilizations in Mexico that were inhabited by Nephi and his ancestors that are right now being uncovered by Archeologists with the ancient Hieroglyphics on the walls of the ancient temples. (Our 3rd oldest daughter was one of the Archeologists who uncovered some of these ancient civilizations once inhabited by Nephi and his ancestors. When she called us to let us know, she was estatic ... "Wow! The Book of Mormon is true! Nephi actually did exist!" She is also a practicing member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, incidentally.)

Our church does not believe in baptizing infants because when human beings are born, they are incapable of doing anything wrong - they are perfect. In our church, children are baptized when they are 8 years old and are beginning to understand the difference between right and wrong.

Our church baptizes by complete immersion rather than by just pouring water over the head as some churches do. This sounds scary but really is not because the people being baptized is only underwater for about 2 - 3 seconds while the arms of the person being baptized are being held on to firmly by a member of the priesthood who is performing the baptism.

Incidentally, neither my husband nor I were born into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. My husband & I were both baptized into the Roman Catholic Church when we were infants. I was a Roman Catholic for more than 48 years before converting to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

One more little comment ... there are people who do not believe that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are Christian. (Such comments are frequently found on various sites of the Internet). If we were not Christian, why would our church be called "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints"?????

I hope this answered your question.

My advice to you is to attend a Sacrament Meeting at your nearby Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints then stay for Sunday School immediately following the Sacrament Meeting. The church may even give you a copy of the Book of Mormon to keep (which will also contain Doctrine & Covenants & Pearl of Great Price). Non members are always welcome to attend a Sacrament Meeting and attend Sunday School immediately following at every Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints around the world. I think you will find it a very enjoyable & rewarding experience just as I did when I began researching the church.
