Part of confession is telling the truth and admitting your faults and errors. You confess to a priest because it is believed that doing so prevents the confession from becoming public knowledge and the priest won't gossip. This of course doesn't mean a priest isn't obligated to call the police if one was to confess to, say, a murder. In addition to confession, one must repent, and people sometimes go to a priest for advice on how to set things straight, both with any other parties and with God.

I look at confession as my grade card.
Imagine going to school all year and knowing you will not be getting a grade for 60 years?
How hard would you try to study? Myself, I would get lazy.
Same with my faith, Confession gives me time to reflect on my RECENT actions, and a chance to confess to God through the Priest. (we don't pay money for this either)
10 years ago before I became Catholic, I thought confession was one of the silliest things about the Catholic Church, now I totally get it.
Peace!

Confession To God is the element... confession to others must be restrained to trusted ones of the religion... confession as practiced via The Roman catholics isn't Biblical. Confession between those of The Church is a fashion of retaining ones self guilty. all anybody is vulnerable in some way whilst it includes keeping our ethical compass... so having trusted associates interior the religion to help us shop on music is a solid element... yet... there are issues that during basic terms God must be conscious of... and this is physically powerful that God can shop a secret...

A validly ordained Catholic priest has the power to give absolution of sin upon confession where any regular person or friend cannot. It is not up to any of us to discuss others shortcomings, we have enough to do to keep up with our own shortcomings. That is between them and God as ours is between God and ourselves.
My "take" on this is that God, in His infinite wisdom, has enabled us to avail ourselves of this Sacrament of confession to reconcile ourselves to Him and share in His divine life through forgiveness and absolution of sin. We receive his divine life (grace) to help us follow Him ever more closely as we strive for sainthood. God calls us all to be saints.

When you share your shortcomings you tend to get judgement in return. The important aspect here is...you recognize within yourself that there are shortcomings and your ability to do something about it.

You should only repent to Jesus. You can talk to others to get advice but why confess to another person. They might use it against you later on.

Do you really need a middle man talk to God? Maybe God would rather you confess your sins directly to Him than to a pseudo-psychologist.

The most important confession is one you make to yourself and how you atone for it.
