University studies show that about 80 % of of total energy cosumption is taken up by our basal metabolism you know breathing, circulating blood and digestign food. That leaves about 20 % for everything else. So a new concept that has come from this research is to stimute our basal metabolism to work harder while by eating foods that are more complex and thus causing our bodies to spend more energy digesting these complex foods. These types of foods that are whole grains, nuts, good fats and unprocessed food types. It has been reported that eating a small handful of almonds (as an example) every hour causes this effect and increases the basal energy expenditure by as much as 5 % more than normal. While this is not a diet and exercise replacement - it all contributes to burning extra calories while we are not doing much physical work. Another option is to lift some weights oncce a day - just one set to exhaustion say for your arms (curls). This will cause your muscles to break down and you body wiull repair them over the next 24 hours - all the while consuming extra energy in doing so.
Good Luck

Get one of those pedal sets that you can put under your desk. You could also take the stairs instead of the elevator, take a walk at lunch time. Walk across the office to ask a question instead of calling. Suck in your stomach then let it out repeatedly (this will work your abs). Fidget

The best way to burn calories is to minimize them in the first place. You can start by eating more "whole foods", meaning foods that are not "processed". Processed foods in general are high in calories, fat and sodium and these obviously lead to weight gain.
Start cooking your own meals. Go buy fresh fish and poultry, vegetables and fruits. Avoid processed meats (deli) and beef. Minimize (very minimal) your "starch" intake, foods like rice, potatoes, pasta, bread. Avoid dairy products like cheese, butter and ice cream.
Do this, and you'll loose weight without even trying! It's true, really. Try going withOUT starchy foods for a couple weeks - eat nothing but lean white meat, vegetables and fruits. You'll really feel and see a big difference in yourself. :-)

Don't email so much, walk to the person you wish to communicate with and deliver the message in person. There are a variety of exercises you can do at your desk and not look like an idiot. Try swing your legs under your desk or just stretching them.

You could add a catalyst, which will create thermogesis, the body's ability to burn fat. I use Lipodrene and Stimerex-ES, because I too sit behind a desk all day.

Stand and walk as much as your job will allow. Standing burns 30 percent more calories then sitting.

Do isometrics while sitting at your desk. Tense up individual muscle groups for a period of time, then relax them... repeat this throughout the day, and you will have a decent workout.
