'm using Windows XP. I get the balloon in the lower right. I tell that not to upgrade. It downloads anyway.

Then I get the opportunity to allow it to install the upgrade I told it not to download when I shut down. If I tell it no 3 times, it now hounds me with a pop up every 5 minutes.

Since it refuses to listen, how do I kill it?

Go to start>control panel>security center>automatic updates and there should be an option to turn them off. I'm assuming you have XP.

go to CONTROL PANEL,then SECURITY CENTER,open SECURITY CENTER and there you can select OFF for automatic updates.
It is not reccommended to turn off automatic updates, the critical ones are very important to your PC.
