I have a kitten who likes to paw at stuff... not like she's clawing it, but more like scratching around as if she's about to pee. It always scares me when she does it because I think she might pee! What is she doing? And why? She's not sharpening her claws....like I said it's more like a litter box type of scratch. She does it to boxes, in laundry baskets, at the door.

Hi there...some cats do this to mark their territory as well as trying to hide their prized possessions. Domestic and exotic felines have scent glands in various parts of the body and the paws is one area. Perhaps you may have had the opportunity to watch documentary where you've witnessed wild cats scratching at tree trunks--not only are they sharpening their claws but they are telling others that this is my turf. If food is involved then they do this pawing action to drag foliage to hide their meal for a later time. They also will then follow by spraying to doubly insure this message as well. Your kitten is just reacting instinctively to say this area or thing is mine and that is mine, etc. It's quite natural and some cats do this more than others.

If you just brought your kittie to your home she is doing it because that is how they mark their territory. I have a 5 year old cat who still does that, some times if they spit a hairball he goes there smells it and paws around it, or if there is a treat or a toy on the floor they do the same, they paw around it, it is a way to mark their territory and say this is mine, they also do it with their food bawl.

If it's a kitten, she's probably just playing. They all have their own little weird things they like to do. She'll grow out of it. But, in the meantime, when she does that, simply pick her up and put her in the litter box. You'll soon know if that's what she is up to.

your kitten is just exploring the territory around her. if she is house broken, then don't worry about her going to the bathroom on your carpets if the kitten is doing this. it's a natural, playful instinct.

it is normal. my cats who are older do it often. it seems like they want to cover up whatever they are smelling, cause my cats will sniff the floor and than start scratching at it like they are covering it up. i wouldn't worry about it at all. i think it is cute, it look like they are dancing kind of. =)
