It's great your a animal lover. You can always get a minature breed of dog. Like a poodle or taco bell dog. There is so many animals that need a good home and if you can provide that it's great.

Make sure you are ready for the commitment that comes with owning a dog. They are cute, cuddly, loyal, but require a lot more attention than cats. They have to be potty trained, walked, and tend to chew on things at a young age, so you basically have to "puppy proof" your house. If you're ready for that kind of commitment, then by all means get the dog you've been longing for. A small dog might be a good idea in a smaller place, but they will need exercise as well, so make sure you walk him/her regularly, and give lots of play time and attention.
Good luck!! ;)

My daughter got a dog and she lived in an apartment,it was a small dog. It now lives with us in a house with a yard.
To be honest they need room. They need grass and dirt.
I do think the really really toy breeds can be good apartment dwellers, but how many hours a day are you gone???
Lots to think about.
Remember dogs are natural hunters. They don't watch TV.
Cats are just different creatures they are very independant.
It can take a dog yrs to get old enough that they dont' need a lot of play time.

If you're up to the commitment any dog takes, it doesn't matter what size your house is. I don't get why people fixate on this so much. We have a fairly small duplex house with a small yard, and two large dogs. The dogs don't play *in* the house so the size of the house is totally irrelevent. When they're inside, they're hanging out with us and/or sleeping. They chew their chew toys or go sack out in their crates. You don't need a big house for these activities.
In our small yard they relieve themselves and do a little wrestling and watch the world go by. Again, it doesn't need to be a big space for this.
They get walked twice a day which is where they get most of their excerise. 30-45 minutes once in the AM before we leave for work and once again when we get home. Then once or twice a week we go to the dog park and then they really get to zoom around (which honestly lasts about 10 minutes before they're tired and just want to roll around in the grass). We also go on hikes in the park and they get to visit all around town with me. It doesn't take a big house to do any of these things.
Large breed dogs are languishing in shelters because everyone thinks that only tiny dogs are manageable. Most large breed dogs, however, are complete couch potatoes. It takes a lot of energy for them to run around so most of the time they just nap. My 95 lb. bloodhound mix is more than happy to hold down the sofa all day.

Definitly wait for more room. Cats do not require nearly the same as dogs in terms of living space. Your small place will get much smaller even if you are only sharing it with a small dog.

I would wait. Two cats is enough for a small townhouse. Besides, you can't raise a Syberian Huskey in those conditions. Trust me when I say this, a Syberian is the best dog to have. They are very protective, but are the biggest babies if you raise them from pup. They are the greatest dogs to have, but they shed badly, but it's okay because you can keep them outside all year round because they're meant to be. A Syberian Huskey is a mix of a huskey and wolf. Very beautiful dogs, very loyal. Not to mention you can find them with split-eyes and they look awesome!

i would wait till you have more room so the dog can run around and play and not have to get used to a new home if you move after getting it. also incase it fights with the cats you'll have more rooms to use to separate them. i also suggest a small dog because if the dog turns on you at least you can pick the dog up and hold its away from you. if you have a big dog you'll have to fight it off and idk how strong you are. but i strongly dont suggest fighting a dog. well if you get a very very tiny dog you may be able to get it now. it depends on what kind you want. good luck!!

If you get a small dog that doesn't need much exercise, that will be good. If you want something different than than that, I'd wait until you get a larger place, preferably with a yard.

I agree, wait until you get a larger place. How about the dog and cats getting along, have you thought about that?

i would get a dog if u wanted a dog i have a yorkie and i live in a 2 apartment house and u couldn't ask for a better dog. so if u want a little dog try yorkies they are the best to have in a house like yours. and remember taking care of a dog is harder than taking care of a cat.
