I was at youth church last night, and they made an alter call for people that wanted to be baptized, and they would discribe what exactly baptizm meant, and so on.

And after a short time they prayed with us, and all three of the adults started speaking in tounges.

I was wondering as they were doing so... What is the significance of praying in tounges, and why do they do it, rather than praying in english?

(this was an Assembly of God church, if you were wondering what the denomination was)

almost ALL "speaking in tounges" is fake.
It's very annoying.
I have only seen it for real one time in my life, and it freaked me out cause I knew it was real.

You did not do any thing wrong. Someone had said before me you cannot turn the Holy Ghost on like a light switch. I've seen these kind of churches before. I was born and raised penticostal, and tongues was a part of it. Some churches make it the most of their religion. Tongues is a sign not to them that believe but to them that believe not. You will see real tongues in churches, but a lot of charismatic churches will do this kind of thing and fake tongues. Remember you cannot turn the Holy Ghost on like a light switch. Read 1 Corinthians chapter 14, esp. verse 22. Galatians 5:22-23 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Look within yourself, you will notice a change in yourself because Jesus Christ has came into you. The fruit of the spirit that is mentioned before, love is the first thing you'll read. If you feel this love towards God, towards people. You know beyond all doubt Jesus is living in you. It was serval years before I spoke in tongues the first time. These are gifts. 1 Corinthians 12: 8-11 I could descern spirits long before I spoke in tongues. But there are many different gifts and we do not all have the same gifts. I know a lot of churches say you are not saved until you speak in tongues but you know how you felt after you gave your life to Jesus. Don't let anyone tell you that you are not saved. Tongues will come and the Holy Ghost will let you know when he is ready. But don't worry, serve God, and keep on pressing toward him. Seek him he will lead you where you should go or what you should do. My Pastor says don't worry about the tongues, when you buy the shoes the tongues come with it. You have the Holy Ghost the tounges will be there. Apostale Paul said tongues is the least of all the gifts "seek to the edifying of the church." Read these scripture I gave you. Study these they will help you.

There is one important note to remember in "speaking in tongues": the tongue in question is actually another language that is also spoken normally. The case that defines this is in Acts 2: 7-11...

"Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs -- we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God."

From this verse, it is clear that speaking in tongues is not gibberish, nor is it an "angelic" language, but is speaking in one (or many) foreign languages not previously known by the speaker, hence the term tongues. The fact that Paul gives the instruction that all speaking in tongues must be interpreted (1 Corinthians 14: 6-25) as well as that an entire congregation is not to speak in tongues (opposed to what some churches practice), gives clear indication of this.

While "speaking in tongues" may be seen by some as a spiritual gift, unless it gives a clear message or has a specific purpose it means nothing (1 Corinthians 14: 14-19) and is pointless. The fact that you asked the question is proof enough that the tongues spoken in your church group are of no purpose, and should have no bearing on your relationship with Christ.

The gift of tongues in the first century CE served two purposes.
Firstly,a new covenant was to replace the ancient Jewish Law Covenant. So that people could see that God's blessing was upon this shift in worship,He used an outburst of miraculous events, including speaking in tongues,to move the hearts of righteously disposed people.
Secondly, because in Jesus' day, printing and broadcasting did not exist, and written records were not common among the ordinary people.Hence the good news of God's will and purpose would have to be carried forth on the tongues of believers.Worshippers of Jehovah came from over a dozen lands, and they spoke different languages. Therefore enpowered with God's holy spirit the disciples started to speak with different tongues, and everyone present was able to understand in their own language.
Only a little more than two decades after this event took place,Paul served notice that this gift of tongues would eventually cease.(1Cor.13:8).Because,the miracles at Pentecost,as a confirmation of early Christianity, had served their purpose well and were no longer needed.
Today, many feel they are assisted by God's holy spirit to speak in tongues. How can we reconcile this with scriptural evidence that the gift of tongues has passed away?
Speaking in tongues usually amounts to highly emotional outbursts of sound that nobody understands. So it cannot be from God.Jesus said that religious hypocrites would try to attach his name to such "powerful acts",but he rejected these "workers of lawlessness"(Mat.7:21-23).
And Paul prophetically warned of a future time when there would be fraudulent miracles,or "lying signs and portents".Thus "every unrighteous deception"is a specialty of the archdeceiver,Satan the Devil-2Thess.2:8-10.
Did you know that speaking in tongues was a part of certain pagan religions of Greece in Paul's day?Their rites mixed speaking in tongues with practices such as the cutting of the flesh and frenzied nude dancing.Such historical examples clearly show that speaking in tongues can occur under circumstances that are most unholy.

When Christians in the first century, spoke in tongues,it edified the listeners. The inspired message was to be
clear and intelligble-1Cor.14:26-28

The Bible does talk of speaking in tounges, however, it also says that God will supply a translator for the speaker. If they were really talking from the true Holy Spirit, a translator would have been there to avoid any confusion.
I am Baptist and although we do not speak in tounges, I do believe it can happen as the Bible says. It's just not as often as some people would have you believe.

Speaking in tongues is to edify your spirit. If it can't be interpreted...it can cause chaos and confusion (which it did).

It's an amazing gift from God (speaking in tongues) however it's not everyone's gift. There is also the gift of interpretation.

I would recommend taking a class on the gifts of the Spirit.

Grace to you and God Bless!

Read Acts 2, and on, for the basis of that practice within the AG.
Then go the AG website (look for Beliefs: Fundamental Truths) and see how they have interpreted Acts 2 in their denomination...pretty interesting, but pretty controversial.
Good luck.

They are praying in babble.
To speak in tongue is to have the Holy Spirit, and you speak and everyone in the world will understand what you say in their native language.
Act 2:4-11

When you are baptized with the evidense of speaking in togues, you are able to pray in the spirit things that the flesh doesn't even know about praying for. You are able to prophesy in the spirit to the flesh.

Yea and these people tell you if you don't believe what I tell you to believe and pray what I tell you to pray than you are not going to heaven. DON'T BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!

Isn't "tongues" supposed to be a language unknown to you? Can you imagine that any language as ever been da da da de de de? Now they may be faking it or maybe that believe that da da da and de de de is speaking in tongues. Either way they can believe what they want.

Just be very skeptical of taking any ones interpretation of the bible as fact. Even mine. LOL
