Strategy, I would recommend Age of Empires 2, which in my opinion is more satisfying than AOE3. X-COM is also a fun game from the past and should run pretty cheap by now.
Shooters, you have the original Doom Games for PC. MMORPGs there is Anarchy Online which is actually free without the expansions. Diablo 1 and 2 are extremely fun and addicting Action, Adventure, RPGs games that should be way cheap.
But if all else fails, there is always Solitaire and Minesweeper. :P

age of empires and age of empires 2 are both great, empire earth, roller coaster tycoon, dirt track racing sprint cars, need for speed III hot pursuit, outlaws, the curse of monkey island, grim fandango, deer hunter 3, powerslide, oddworld abe's oddysee, any of the unreal's, road rash, midtown madness, and army men.

you should download the elder scrolls 4: oblivion, it is an rpg, it won game of the year everywhere, and you can download it from an p2p program.

i dunno much about the latest games but i like to play Unreal Tournament 99 and 2004.They are quite old though.
