I cannot see how a man of any large degree of humorous perception can ever be religious — unless he purposely shut the eyes of his mind & keep them shut by force.

All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.

AHH! You are NOT an atheist!! You believe in Mark Twain! Come on out of that atheist closet Mr Mojo. It's in you. It's eating you up. You believe it deep down but are disillusioned by the media's portrayal of larger organizations of which some have misused their positions. They will answer for that. But making a blanket statement like that is certainly irrational. I see great things for you. You are still hiding behind the door, but you spend too much time in this area to not believe. Come on Mr Mojo.

That’s quite a huge conspiracy theory, about all religions, institutions, and governments. Wow, sounds like Mark Twain was a bit of an anarchist.

Not a question. If that is in his journal then that is what he believed and had every right to believe it. From what I know of Mark Twain, he was a very opinionated man, which is fine. Everyone has opinions.

All the great artisans of the past were religious people.

Composers, authors, poets, painters....none of them were proclaimed atheists. And, in fact, many of them credited their faith in (God) as the major source of their inspiration.

Of course many of them abhored the institution of church (as you put it). Organized religion is a staggeringly restricitive force upon humanity. But a personal relationship with your (God) can be a source of great freedom and happiness.

I don't usually talk about Babylon the Great because it is in the past. If you want to see God criticizing the church just read the Bible and Swedenborg's theology.

Ultimately that's the conclusion I came to prior to defining myself as an atheist.
