...or is this just a cop out to go and sleep with someone else?

Surely if you love something you don't want to set it free?
I'm sure my wife would love me to go home and say "I love you, now you're free to leave"

Sounds like a cop out to me!

You never know the answer to that question, as once you are gone there will be another along as sure as eggs are eggs.

How about the saying "If you love something, don't leave....", ... or is this just a cop out to blame someone else for what is a joint decision?

If you are with a free bird that cannot be tied down, then it is surely best to set such a bird free as in the long run it will suit you both best. If you are with a bird that makes a nest and stays put, then you will stay with that bird without a doubt. (well probably)

I am not the kind of guy that sleeps around. As a matter of fact, I have not ever slept with anyone, but I do believe in the saying about setting something free if you love it. I believe that true love sets people free to be themselves and be loved for it. If you truly love someone, you let them do what they want because you want to the greatest good for them. They may make mistakes or leave you. I believe that if they call upon you you should protect them, but if they want to wander from you, they should be able to. If you loved them as you ought, they will ALWAYS come back to you if it is meant to be. Why force someone to do something? Love is truly free.

I knew a guy who treated his girlfriend terribly, was generally a bully to her, but she kept coming back to her when he asked, because he said he loved her. If he'd truly loved her he would have left her alone so she could meet someone who truly cared for her and treated her with respect.

If you love someone you should set them free. True pure love is about wanting what's best for the other person.

Yes it is true. But not really what you mean here. Just don't overwhelm your guy. It is different if he just want to sleep with you and want to get out of you making this as a reason. That would be a lot of fooly. Get rid of that kind of guy.

I believe it from the bottom of my heart. We cannot keep people close to us. They must chose to bind themselves to us on their own. If someone just disappears when you let them go, that means you meant nothing to them.

(By setting people free i don't mean dumping them. I mean not applying pressure and insistence. The girl has to be there because that is what she wants. I don't want her if she's there only because I asked her.)

Yeah.
"If you love something set it free, if it doesn't come back...you track it down and kill it. Then mount it on the wall."
