My daughter has always had dummies for bed, but the last 6 mths she has started having them all the while she is with me and her dad. She doesnt have them at nursery, at her nans. but as soon as we ge and collect her she gets it right away. She gets really upset when we try to take it off her, i am at my wits end. Any ideas to get them off the dummies - i have tried bribbery an that hasnt worked.

Bribery doesnt work. You have to be straight and consistant. Decide you aregetting rid of it and that is it. Go to the zoo and "give" it to the baby monkey or elephant. THats how my mum got rid of my bottle. Once that is it then there is no turning back. Dont keep any for "emergencies" you are the one that gives in and gives it back to her. She will scream but it will only be for a few days and then it will be over. better than a lifetime of orthodontic trouble.

Have you tried burying it in the garden? its almost like saying that you're growing up now so you don't need this, or asking your daughter what she has been doing at nursery and hopefully by the time she tells you all that she won't think about the dummy. Otherwise you may have to rely on the father christmas or fairy dummy trick the dummy is wrapped up and left for father christmas or the fairy dummy to remove it while she is asleep and the majic happens

Just get rid of them. Explain to her that she's getting to be a big girl and big girls don't have dummies!

I like the idea of putting it into a teddy- at the Bear Factory (they have one in most town centres- or have a look on the internet for one) you can make your own teddy, you choose the animal, it's clothes and you can give it a heart and record a little message in it- perhaps you could choose a baby animal and put the dummy into it- and then record a message of your own voice for your little one to hear when she needs it?

It's a long winded solution I know, but it might be a nice way to do it.

you just got to throw them out, shes probably going to scream the house down but maybe you could try and explain to her that shes getting bigger now and big girls dont have dummies, you could try getting something to replace the dummie like a small teddy or something, so that when she asks for the dummy you give her that instead , let ther choose what its going to be replaced with and let her see the dummies being thrown out, or i saw another persons answer about a dummy fairy like the tooth fairy, let her put it under the pillow and tell her that the dummy fairy is going to give it another little girl to have , its definatly going to be hard work for a week or so but its all worth it in the end!

good luck :)

Give a "dummy" cut off date. My eldest was particularly attached to her pacifier. We started making pacifier free zones. Bed and car were the only place she could use a pacifier. Then several months before she had her birthday we started telling her that when she had her birthday she would be too old to use a pacifier. She actually quit using it before her birthday and we had it put into a stuffed poodle at Buld a Bear Workshop.

PS... I don't think hot sauce is a good alternative. It can damage their sensitive mouths. And castor oil can upset your child's stomach.

time to go cold turkey!!!
but introduce it gently, by discussing it with her... bring her round to the idea that it would be good if she stopped cos she is a big girl now... does she want to be a big girl like her friends?
set a date with her on when to cold turkey is going to start.
once it starts, throw away all dummies with her... and when she starts craving, kicking and screaming, just suck it in and bare it. she probably won't want comforting, so just let her get on with it, and talk to her when she comes out of it... what a brave girl she is. small reward at the end of day one.... big reward after day three that expresses that she is a big girl now... and a trip to a pool or something after a week. but don't make a big issue of the rewards as being rewards after the first one... reminding her all the time of her dummies just isn't going to help.
good luck!

There are three ways to do it. You could do it cold turkey, like I did with my daughter; when she was 9 months old, one night we couldn't find one (we had like 10) and she had to go to bed without it, and never used one after that. Or you could put hot sauce in all of them and when she puts it in her mouth she will cry for a little while but probably won't want it anymore. Or you could ask a friend who has a baby to ask her for her binky for the new baby, that way she will feel like she's making a sacrifice by giving her binky away, but she'll be happy that she gave it to the new baby.

hi, i had the same problem with my little girl. i tried everything under the sun to get her off dummies but nothing worked. the way i managed in the end was to tell her that santa was collecting all her dummies in return for prezzies. it worked a treat, even now if she finds one lying around, she gives it to me to give to santa. hope this helps you .

My daughter left her dummy out for Father Christmas in return for him leaving her presents.

I'm not sure what a "dummys" is. But try putting a disgusting but harmless substance on the parts she sucks...like castor oil or hot sauce. ...if you use the hot sauce, have milk and bread or crackers handy.
