Rottweiler is the breed - and there's only one of them. There are different body types among rottweilers, but only one breed.

You Go PistonGyrl!...I bred and raised the "German" type rottweilers, and every time someone called my beautiful male a Rock-waller, I wanted to beat them over the head!

The pronunciation is Rot-while-er!

The body styles are the only difference...as Americans, we have bred for bigger dogs, and ended up with a "Boxer" look to this beautiful breed.
The "German" breed is a short stocky build, while the "American" breed is tall and lanky.

Any Rottweiler that is born in America is an American Rottweiler. The only way to get a true German Rottweiler is to import them...you can have an American Rottweiler with German Bloodlines...that is what mine were.

The "German" Rotti has a big block head and a short blunt muzzle. The American usually has a long pointed muzzle.

Hope this helps!

Like many have said before and even more will say afterward, Rottweiler IS the breed.

However.....

There are 3 different styles of Rottweiler: American Rottweiler, German Rottweiler, and Roman Rottweiler.

American Rottweilers were bred to look smoother, less solid, more effeminate than German Rottweilers. The rust markings on them are lighter, and their heads aren't as blocky.

German Rottweilers were bred for size, strength, and protectiveness. Their rust markings are darker, their heads blocky, and their bodies thicker and more robust.

Roman Rottweilers have been bred to resemble early Roman standards of the "first" Rottweilers in Rome. They have more Mastiff in them, and are bred according to those ancient traditions.

Its ok that you didn't know that rottweiler is the breed. They could be mixed with other dogs to make a different breed. But the rott is its own breed, just one. Learn something new everyday!!!!

Lol. so just kidding. I hate hearing people pronounce the dogs breed incorrectly. But I couldn't resist.
Their is just one Breed of Rottweiler but they have different body and head types. Boxy or slender. German are boxier. American are more slender.

One breed, two distinctly different body types. American is the taller, thinner body type. German is the shorter, blockier and heavier body type.
