Aniseed balls. They are hard and less likely to go off,plus they are yummy. They will drop out of the machine ok too.

My hubbie and I put either skittles or runts in ours. My parents have one as well and they put M&M's in theirs. Funny- neither of us have ever put gumballs in the gumball machine.
