The 2 vehicles are unorthadox looking SUV's. That is where the similarities end.
Ground Clearance in Inches:
FJ: 9.6
H3: 9.1
Approach Angle in Degrees:
FJ: 34.0
H3: 40.0
Departure Angle in Degrees:
FJ: 30.0
H3: 37.0
Water Fording Ability in Inches:
FJ: 27 at 5 mph
H3: 23 at 5 mph
The FJ has a hill holding system.
They both have skid plates.
The Center Differential for the H3 is open with manual locking.
The Center Differential for the FJ is limited slip with manual locking, which is better for off roading.
The FJ has stability control.
The FJ has a shorter braking time from 70-0 ft.
And really people, most people who buy Hummers dont take them off road, they usually stick big wheels on them and show them off.
I drove by an H3 with 22 inch rims on it, and I have never seen an FJ with bigger wheels, they're usually smaller.
In an off-road comparison test, these trucks would be quite similar, but you couldn't find a Hummer with regular sized wheels on it that you could take off-road.
Also:
FJ: 239 hp/278 lb ft torque, curb weight; 4295 lbs (18lbs/hp) city 17 mpg, hwy 21 mpg, base price of 24k w/auto (stick shift comes in full time 4wd only and has lower gear ratio....and that model was the ONLY manufactured vehicle EVER to cross the entire Rubicon trail w/o a single break down or needing a winch!) max towing: 5000 lbs.
H3: 242 hp/242 lb ft torque, curb weight; 4700 lbs (19.5lb/hp). city 15 mpg, hwy 20 mpg, base price of 30k w/ stick shift, max towing: 4500lbs.
As you can see, except for approach/departure angles (however it's higher ground clearance and shorter wheel base will combine to give it a much better break-over angle, which I was unable to find, but that's common sense that even these gung-ho buy "Mexican made with American names" promoters can even see) the FJ is far superior in every conceivable way. It's also a Toyota so it'll last forever, and have outstanding resale value.

Don't mistake the FJ cruiser with a real Landcruiser. the FJ is a close brother to the 4runner. True Landcruisers are built in the Araco plant in Japan. The FJ is also built in Japan so the quality will certainly be better than any american built vehicle. (if not why do jap vehicles have the best resale ie residual value and toyota just passed ford as the top seller in the United States?) They should also pass GM for worldwide sales this year.
The FJcruiser is a better vehicle than any hummer ever was. All 3 included. Just remember the quality difference. It's easier to get unstuck than unbroken. ALso the FJ was designed to compete with the h3 and nissan xterra. Ford has no competitor.
Personally I'd go with a 4door taco or a used lexus gx470(prado series landcruiser) either with a rear locker and mild lift would be a very capable vehicle.
BTW I have a real FJ40 on 40" tsls and it's pretty capable too.
good luck

I love it! I like the styling, and the interior. The throwback look is popular right now, and I think Toyota got it right on this one! I do like the white top, although more so with the colors (ie blue & yellow) than with the black body.
Drives well - great engine, good power. Tight steering and a quiet ride. You get looks everywhere you go! I am always checking them out when I see them while I am commuting.
Lots of (comfortable) passenger and cargo room. Good stereo (not great).
I do not like the gas mileage. Not good (even for an SUV). With all the fuel effcient models Toyota makes, I am surprised that they didn't make a better effort in that regard. Too bad.
Price is reasonable - high for similar sixed vehicles, but it IS A TOYOTA. The quality and service is worth it to me (esp. after all my bad experiences at VW). Good build, and intelligent in the design. I rarely find features on a Toyota that make me say "now why did they do that??"
If I had the money, it would be my first choice. I think they're great!

The FJ Cruiser is nothing other than a HUMMER wanna be. They try to make it all big and bad and say it will go anywhere. WRONG. It does not have the ground clearance of an H3. It does not have the approach, break-over, and departure angles of an H3. It is not 4-door. The engine is weak. You can only get one interior color which is charcoal. All of them look retarded with a white roof. The H3 has better fuel economy at 20 MPG. So, if it can't out do the H3 on anything, imagine how it compares to an H2 or H1. Toyota=Junk.

I love it, I think it is an awesome vehicle. The only thing I am not real sure about is the white roof, other than that, I like it a lot.

I really like the retro front end and the white roof, but the rest of it looks like an afterthought.

I'm starting to see them more and more. They certainly are unique-looking. I've heard their workmanship isn't that great though.
