Sherlock Holmes was a fictional character. He was loosely based upon a college professor of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote the Holmes books and stories, but Holmes himself was fictional.

Sherlock Holmes was fiction - written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
I can't remember exactly but I have a sneaking suspicion that he was based on a real person(s). Google Sir Arthur Doyle and you'll probably get the answers you require.

Fiction. A character made up by the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

It's just one of those classic works of literature that's become so ingrained in the culture that over time people have forgotten where the character itself came from.

Fiction completely. The stories were originally published in magazines. (Can't remember which.) People got REALLY attached to Holmes, though, and when Arthur Conan Doyle tried to kill his character off he got tearful letters from people, so he had to "take it back". Though Holmes never existed, many, many people think he did. (Maybe because he's famous even to people who haven't read the stories, and because he has a street address.)
