why are there many plants without thorns still? Shouldn't all fruit bearing trees and plants have thorns in order to punish us more thoroughly?

You see, evolution is real and your pastor is incorrect. This question is one reason why I do not subscribe to religion...no way...no shape...no how. To suggest to another person what your pastor did is just irresponsible. If that is the case, I have an interesting notion/reason why people should not fly: God didn't give us wings. See the stupidity of that reason? Throw down the crutches that the religion has enabled you with and become a free thinker.

Try reading Genesis 3:17-19
Thorns are mentioned here. As a punishment? It seems to me that God meant the thorns and thistles to be a pain in the neck for gardening. A punishment for disobedience. Not putting thorns on all plants but this type of plant, such as weeds, to hinder the growing and harvest of the garden. Basically God was telling Adam that he messed up and the life of luxury that he had in Eden was to be replaced by misery and working for even a meal.

I don't think that is right at all, I would have thought it was to put animals off eating the plants, which I take it they did in the Garden of Eden as well. Thorns are for defence, nothing to do with imperfection or sin. I would like to know where in the bible that the pastor got that information.

Yes, I am sure something like that happened. There were a lot of things that happened before the fall and before the flood that do not happen anymore.

THE important thing to remember is that AFTER the fall, there was SIN in the world. There was imperfection in a perfect world. So, for lack of a better anecdote, the equation no longer balanced. We have imperfection and that wrought all kinds of changes.

When you shoot an arrow and do not hit the bulls eye, it is because of sin in the world. Otherwise, your aim would be perfect because YOU would be perfect.

I believe your pastor gave you a quickie statement, which is something that needs to be clarified properly...

The verses he has in mind is in Genesis 3: 17-19...

"... Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; from dust you are, and to dust you shall return."

The "it" that is bringing forth thorns and thistles, based on some grammar lessons, would be the ground, not the plants itself.

The punishment, that man must now work for his daily meal rather than being able to eat freely from the provision of the Lord, is considered a just punishment as what Adam and Eve did, in obeying the serpent (Satan), is to say that they did not need God for they were like gods. It is a just punishment from a just God, without excessive cruelty.

Well, sad to say there may be a grain of truth to that statement as Apple trees ARE of the Rose family. Since roses have thorns it would make sense that that family is "cursed with thorns".... however, I still think it's a fairly ludicrous statement to make to you.

I personally don't believe that is true. God gives so much attention to the precise detail in EVERYTHING. We don't know that there were not thorns on things that were in the garden of eden. In my personal opinion I'm sure there were thorns on some things there.

Plants that have thorns are not meant to have thorns as a mean to punnish us. It's simply another precise detail in the creation of God.

Blessings To You & Yours

That's so silly. My God is a loving God that does not punish but just as Jesus taught in parables using nature to teach us. Thus, beautiful flowers have thorns just as life is beautiful but we also go through a lot of thorny situations.

How does the crown of thorns fit into all this: Something to think about.

Genesis says that the ground brought forth ... thorns and thistles... This was part of sin and man having to work harder than he would have if sin had not entered into the world.
