Friendly Hello,

A female dog always has to be in heat to get pregnant. There are statistics out there that says if the male penetrates without tieing a pregnancy can still occur. We breed AKC Bullmastiffs. So far in our professional experience with breeding. We have found that a successful mating occurs with a tie or if you AI a dog. What kind of dog do you own? You can email me directly at bullmastiffpuppiesakc@yahoo.com

You said "I am not responsible for the millions of dogs homeless"....DUH! How do you think we end up witn millions of dogs homeless....it is from people like you breeding their dogs, and breeding dogs such as pitbulls who are very difficult to adopt out. Even if you find good homes for all your puppies...that is one less home for all the animals waiting for homes in shelters. Go get an education!!

Selfish selfish selfish.

*I* want more puppies around so *I* want to mate my dogs. Me me me me me. Ever think of the dogs? Ever think of the dogs at the shelter who are now going to be competeing for a limited number of homes with the puppies you are bringing in to the world? Ever think about how they feel when they're being taken to the euthanasia room to be killed? About how they smell that other dogs have died there and are terrified? About the life they could have had in a loving home that you're selfishly taking away from them? Just because you like cute puppies?

NEWSFLASH: everyone likes cute puppies. But those cute puppies become dogs and dogs are put down at a rate of 6 per minute every day of every month of every year because everyone just loves cute puppies.

Everyone thinks their dogs is cute and special. It is absolutely SELFISH to think that your dog is so cute and special that other dogs should have to die so you can make more cute puppies.

I will absolutey judge people who do this uncharitably. You are causing the deaths of beautiful, thinking, feeling, loving creatures becasue of your selfishness. It's all about you isn't it? It's all about what you want and how your dog is so much specialer than every other dog on the planet. You don't want to hear about the results of your actions because then you might have to think about someone other than yourself. Grow up.

Don't 'mate' your dog. That's insane to bring more animals into this world on purpose when there are so many wonderful animals that need homes.

There are many mixed breeds, 1/2 breeds, pure breeds that need homes. There are many shelters and rescues that would love to adopt out a pet. Please spay her. That is the healthiest for her.

Yes a dog has to be in heat to get pregnant. Why do you want to breed your dog? And if you seriously want to add to the puppy population, have you thought about the expense involved in properly raising puppies, will you be able to get homes for them? What about vet care expenses for your dog if she needs help?

If you're serious, get a good book and read it first so you know what you're doing.

First of all, I have to say that I've read the other answers to your question, and I am so SICK of people judging those of us who just simply want to breed their dog because we love them and want to own more dogs of that breed! Not all people who breed their dogs are irresponsible, and as for me, I have a mini dach who is pregnant and all of the pups are spoken for and will go to excellent homes (one home will be my own!).

On to your question...YES, they have to "TIE" or "KNOT" with the male. The female will not let the male tie with her until she is ready, which is while she is in heat. She will bleed during heat, so you'll definetely know when she comes into heat. But don't think that as soon as she begins bleeding that you can breed her. Mine bled for two weeks before I introduced her to her boyfriend. And females do a thing called "flagging" when they are ready to accept the male for breeding. They will move their tail aside from their vulva area when the male is around her, and this shows the male she is willing. Believe me, you WILL know when your female is locked together with a male. They actually stay stuck together for anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes. The female usually drags the male around cuz he swells up inside of her and they cannot unlock until his erection and testicles go back down to almost normal size. They will often end up laying down together, butt to butt until they unlock.
Also, it's wise to let them tie more than once for a successful breeding to occur. Once every other day so the male has time to build up sperm. And make sure the age of the male is at least 2 years old, as this age is the best chance for having good quality sperm. And, don't breed a big dog with a small dog. It will be painful for her in breeding and also birth.
You need to do some more research before you breed your dog. I've spent hours on the net researching about breeding my dog, and talking with my vet. I do ask questions on this board, though, cuz I'm nervous. My dog is 57 days pregnant today, and they are pregnant anywhere from 58-63 days, depending on the breed of dog.

Good luck to you and please make sure the potential pups have excellent homes to go to BEFORE you breed your female.

Normally, they do have to lock.........but I've seen females get pregnant without. Also, with artificial insemination, there is no locking, so what's the difference? However, they do have to be in heat and normally get pregnant between the 5-7th day after they start.

certain, she is breedable even as the blood STOPS. there's a form of "morning after technique shot, even if it truly is totally risky, and can want to go away the ***** open to extreme an infection. Why do not you purely spay her? talk with the vet as to even as he needs to do it. Spaying should be ok in about a week or so, even as her entire season is over. different canines can nevertheless breed her till then, so do not enable her out, off leash.
