Hand foot and mouth disease in children is a viral illness caused by a virus called Coxsackie Virus.

It is contagious from a little while before the rash appears to after the rash is gone.

It goes away by itself.

It is not usually serious or life threatening.

The blisters/ulcers in the mouth can be painful and if you get some baby-teething gel, you can rub it in the child's mouth and make the pain a little easier. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is useful also.
