A doorknob clearly has no functional mental capacity. However, "dumb as a box of hammers" gets my vote. You can only use one hammer at a time!

i can repeat the ones that i have heard... a few sandwiches short of a picnic, not the brightest crayon in the box, from the shallow end of the gene pool,elevator doesn't reach the top floor,not playing with a full deck,missing the important link,missing more the just the tater salad from the picnic,hair is preventing oxegen flow to brain,family tree doesn't branch.
