was a nice guy, but I threw him out because his drinking got worse...I cheated on him with a friend of his..before I threw him out, and probably that is one of the reasons I threw him out..After I threw him out I married his friend...this has hurt him deeply, but he has managed to sober up in AA, and has been sober for seven years...he knows we are not getting back together, and is fine with that, and has tried to make ammends to the best of his ability..He sends me birthday cards, and when my mother died a few months back, he sent me a memoria contribution...we were both wrong, but he knows that if I had not thrown him out, he would not have gotten sober...he is still having a rough go of it, he knows we will never get back together, and I know he is sorry for the things he did...is it ok for him to send me birthday cards, and things like memorial contribuitons for my mothers death...what should I do...I don't feel accepting them is leadin him on...he just wants to be at peace.

Seven years is a long time.

I feel that if you truly love someone, it never really stops, even if the relationship does.

As long as he can accept the fact that the relationship is over, he could be a valuable friend.

There is nothing wrong with birthday cards and such. Why not be friends? I went though a very similar experience but we could not be friends, he never straightened himself out. As long as you both know and accept that the relationship is purely platonic, I say more power to you!

I honestly think you have feelings for him still. Its ok I mean you guys shared a great big part of each others lives. If you didnt have any feelings for him you wouldnt let him send you anything, and how does your husband feel about this? I am glad he sobered up.

Next time he sends you something, send him some boozes like a bottle of rum or a six pack.
