Black tie is a dress code for formal evening events. Its primary component is the dinner jacket (or "D.J.") as it is known in the United Kingdom, the northeastern United States, and Canada. The jacket and matching trousers are typically called a tuxedo in the United States and Canada.

Black tie is today worn at a wide variety of functions, and the corresponding female attire can range from a short cocktail dress to a long gown, depending on fashion, local custom and the hour at which the function takes place.

Black tie consists of:
- Black short coat with silk (ribbed) or satin lapels
- Black trousers with a row of silk braid or ribbon down each leg
- White dress shirt with a marcella or pleated front
- Black silk bow tie
- Black cummerbund or low-cut waistcoat
- Black socks
- Black leather shoes

Hi, "Black Tie" is a formal event and theoretically the men are required to wear a tux, although many have relaxed that rule and just wear a suit. Women should wear formal, meaning long dresses, at least to the top of the ankle. The dress does not have to be beaded, just fancy enough to look like you are going to a state dinner. Gloves are not required. Have fun and good luck.

It's a formal invitation where you have to wear a dinner jacket and a bow tie. Try companies like Moss Bros. which usually have a shop in most High Streets. Could be expensive though. Do you know anyone who will lend you a DJ?

It means you are going to an upmarket bash. Formal evening wear is required: gentlemen wear a dinner suit, including black bow, and ladies wear evening - whether it is long formal or cocktail will depend on the time of day: long for night, cocktail for earlier.

The dinner suit should be a real one. A black suit with a black bow is tacky. Make sure you shine your shoes. Tons of places hire tuxedoes so get onto 118118 and ask for a list around your area.

A formal suit, jacket, TIE and shirt obviously. Look in the yellow pages for clothing/dress hire and ring around for some prices.

It just means you should wear a nice suit/tux.

Basically it means that the couple wants a formal occasion. May not be a bad idea to have at least one color that the couple is using in your outfit.

It means that its a black tie affair which means you are required to wear a tuxedo or a fancy dress. No clue where you can get that as I live in America sorry.

Try Moss Bros for a hired dinner suit, they can hire you out shirts and bow ties too but you may find these cheaper to buy elsewhere.
