You should be taking at least a gram of Valtrex daily, maybe more.
If you were diagnosed by a physician, I am hopeful that you are already on this regimen. It is a smooth, nice anti-viral drug with a low side-effect profile. I also hope, that as a competent physician, he/she gave you some serious pain meds, as this is a gruesome, painful condition, due to the fact that it is the nerve endings themselves that are involved.

Adelle Davis discussed general measures to deal with problems like this in her book Let's Get Well (Pg 126 and 135). Prescription for Natural Cures by Balch & Stengler has a chapter on shingles (pg 472-476). The latter book gives a load of advice on how to deal with this painful condition.

The alternative medicine of choice is L-Lyseine. I have seen cases where people have been on everything else and used it as a "last resort" only to be shocked how well it worked. Get it from a local health food store. Make sure you get capsules of it to take, and the cream to put on your leg.
Good Luck

Unfortunatley when my 7 year old daughter got it we tried all kinds of lotions and things. You have to let it run its course. The only thing that seemed to work for her was a hot bath with oatmeal packs in the water.
