because sadly it seems like it's all the skinny model types that guys are drooling over so girls are desperate to get or stay skinny cause of that. I have an average body (not skinny but not big either) & had a bf who swore he loooved it but he'd still think models were absolutely HOTT & had posters of skinny girls all over his room....it didn't make me feel too good.

I think the media has a lot answer for on this matter, All the adverts for hairspray or makeup all show skinny Minnnie's, you read glossy magazines how many size 10/12 women do you see, not a lot mostly 6/8. Did anyone see that model from somewhere in the eastern countries Poland or Hungary Size 0..... yes 0 you could use her ribs for a xylophone. and the sad thing is that girls 14/15 yrs old take notice of this and think there too fat....and get themselves in trouble with the latest diets And starve themselves. Just be yourself and be happy.

i think the media is to blame. It lies to you and it does this for one reason and one reason only. TO MAKE MONEY

this is how it works

If every woman was happy with her self image...beauty products would just never sell. If the media image of womanly beauty was a well rounded woman with curves...or even an older woman, then these companies would never sell anything because the avarage woman ages...she has a womanly shape. Not a gamine boyish one

The beauty industry relies on lowering the self esteem of women in order to sell things- FACT.

They show you an image of a skinny teenager and say this is what beauty is. Often this image is not even real and is digitally enhanced to make the lie even bigger. Doing this is insideous manipulation because they show you what you "should" be like- and offer you the "solution" all in the same advertisement.

They show you this very narrow image of what beauty is because it is a hard thing for most women to attain, and to attain it you need to spend money on things they make, which makes their investors rich.

Even if you are a teenager you are not one for long. So this very youthful very skinny image makes them able to sell you products...lots of them to solve this problem and get you to resemble what they tell you is "beautiful"

So media lies if not being the cause of women's insecurities...plays on them and encourages them to worsen. They do this for profit.

Sadly, since it's worked so well on women, the same thing is being used to manipulate men and even children now. It's not exactly moral or right but if you are aware of it you can choose not to accept it or buy products which encourage this kind of negative brainwashing.

I must disagree with topgirl. It isn't that guys are obsessed with skinny girls -- most of us aren't (especially men of color like myself, who definitely like to have something to hold onto). The problem is that Hollywood and Madison Avenue assault us with idealized female images that are almost universally young, blue-eyed and rail thin. Blonds are far more common in the media than they are in the general population. We have these images of what it means to be beautiful shoved in our faces so much, it's no wonder that so many women feel inferior.

What a shame that those women are upset over something that has nothing to do with their beauty or lack thereof. In the case of the modeling industry, the reason that the women are skinny is purely practical. When designers show their wares, they want people to notice the clothes, not the girls. So they choose girls who don't have much in the way of hips or bust so that it's the clothes that stand out and not the girls' figures. It's also easier for thin girls to do fast clothing changes (often necessary in modeling shows).

Woman have always had an obsession of looking good for everybody else (especially guys). Teens even become anorexic because they are so obsessed of how they look. Todays society isn't really that accepting of everybody, and that affects us woman. We just want to be accepted and feel beautiful by everyone else (especially guys).
But not all woman are like that, I was, but now I don't care what other people think of me that often... I'm actally happier now, beacuse nobody controls me.

It's because society makes them think they should be that way. When did you last see a TV advert with a nice curvy woman, or one that is just slightly larger than normal? You don't, you only ever see stick thin women, in adverts constantly harping on about "how to look great","how to lose pounds" - it's the marketing that does it.

Because there is nothing worse than grabbing a big role of fat and or looking at a rear that looks like cottage cheese.

sometimes it's not about the opposite sex... maybe you should consider that.
Some women obsess over their weight because of themselves, something that they can control or somehow to make themselves feel better.. its actually not usually about being attractive

because, in general, men only look at the skinny women. and women like attention, whether they admit it or not. though, luckily, i'd rather not be one of the REALLY skinny ones...i mean, do ya really wanna see a girl's ribs?! please...
