I hope your pediatrician is very involved in this child's care. PKU is a metabolic disorder where the individual cannot properly metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine. Left untreated, it can result in severe mental impairment. When a proper diet is followed, there is little to no resulting impairment. The gene for it is somewhat more common in northern European stock, but it can occur in any race. It is great that your child was diagnosed early, to avoid the dreadful sequelae.

There is formula without phenylalanine available, there are instructions for special diet. A good source for funding, information would be your local March of Dimes. There should also be a lot of information on the internet, as well as support groups (real and online).

I think those with that condition can't have aspartame (Nutrasweet).
