A while back I posted a question of what to do with this lady in my apartment building who has been harrassing and bullying my kids to the point where they feel uncomfortable outside. I did complain to the building manager with a written complaint. Since that incident I refused to believe that one of the managers could be taking sides. It's his job and should never be. He is really one sided with the trouble maker and I believe he is doing things to make life harder on my family. Lately I have people banging on my fire escape in the middle of the night, my buzzer to let people into the building has been disconnected and the complaints I have about getting things fixed in my apartments are going unattended. I need a bucket to flush my toilet. Any suggestions? We are house hunting but I need peace of mind until we do move.

I didn't start the mess to begin with. These are my kids whom I am trying to protect. When my kids are inside and afraid to go out because of an adult, I do get concerned. I'm not a trouble maker, just a mom with a family who are trying to make ends meet and get by. Truthfully at least once a week that lady has the cops to her door about something.

Sounds familiar... There are a lot of good suggestions here including withholding your rent, calling the cops, etc. These are all legitimate. One other possible solution has to do with community and peer pressure. Assuming 90% of your building are decent people and that your "wonderful" neighbor has a few friends in the building, you can print out flyers and give each apartment one. On the flyers you can right articles about harassment and how to deal with it, suggestions on bettering your community via community meetings, and even surveys. This is a win-win solution since she won't know its you and her actions will be known to everyone thus putting her in the spotlight.

Until your problems are fixed (broken toilet, for example) stop paying your rent. Open an escrow account and put your rent money in there. Until the toilet (and anything else that happens to be broken) is fixed, you're not legally obligated to pay rent.

As for the fire escape and the evil neighbor...I don't know what to tell you. As long as she's not physically harming your children, I don't think you can really do anything other than keep complaining to the manager. If he's on her side though it's pointless.

Good luck and happy house hunting!

You can withhold your rent until they fix your toilet and everything else that needs fixed (at least most states allow this, check your local Landlord/Tenant law).

As for the harassment, call the police when it happens.

HATE TO SAY THIS, BUT AS A PERSON WHO HAS LIVED IN AN APT. FOR MANY YEARS, I THINK I'D HAVE TO MOVE. THE PROBLEMS WILL ONLY GET WORSE. IT DOESENT SOUND LIKE IT'S WORTH ALL THE PROBLEMS AND WORRY. SEE IF THEY'LL LET YOU OUT OF YOUR LEASE AND START OVER SOMEPLACE ELSE. YOU'LL BE BETTER OFF!
