Well, no one's saying anyone can't have nuclear power. I believe that a nuclear power reactor was offered to Iran for free. However, one would have to be crazy to let erratic, fanatical, dictators amass nuclear weapons, just because "we have them". That's like standing in front of a bullet, because you have a gun in your closet.

"Western Nations" do not decide who can have nuclear industry, the United Nations makes that choice - thus UN weapons inspectors. Among those having nuclear weapons is China, Pakistan & India, even Russia can not be called "Western Nations". More research is needed by you before asking your question.

The answer is no the United States does not make that decision, but they do get a vote. Many western nations have cut back on the number of nuclear weapons they keep.

Because we have earned that right by fighting (2) major world wars about those who would attack others.

Iran is the nuclear country in question. How level headed do you think their leader is? He claims that the holocaust never happened and that Israel should be wiped off the face of the earth. Seems we have heard someone just like him in the 1940's (remember Hitler?).

North Korea is run by that decidedly eccentric Kim Jong IL, but he is an isolationist, not making plans to attack anyone outwardly.

Would we be concerned over Switzerland or another peaceful country attaining nuclear status? Not likely.

Because we are all grown up enough to know that they are a bad thing and for the last 30 years the big grown up nations have been trying to reduce nuclear arsenals and ultimately aim for a world without them.

At the same time countries like Pakistan which has grinding poverty and social welfare issues is building and testing them like mad so that they can can threaten India who is doing the same thing.

The aim should be to get rid of all nuclear weapons, not encourage unstable and volatile states to get them.

This is where reality meets the road.

We should support Iran's right of self determination, right?

So, if they want to invest in the nuclear age, so be it!

Right!

But this is the real world. It is that simple. Doesn't make sense but that is what it is.

Excellent question!

It is the responsibility of the US government to protect its people. This protection, in part, is achieved by limiting the ability of power hungry, hostile nations to aquire nuclear technology. It's odd how most the countries wanting nuclear power are the one's sitting on billions of gallons of crude oil. Seems to me they don't much need nuclear power.

Western nations think they can decide who can have nukes because cretain countries just shouldn't have any. Like Iran which is full of a bunch of radical fanatics. Its like giving Hitler nukes during WW2 and expecting him not to use them.
