Is this a corporate abbreviation like Gmbh or is short for a longer name like Gebrecht or for instance Geo. for George in English? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Gebr. is the abreviation for "Gebrüder" - brothers
Two - or more brothers - founded a plant.

Well it would help immensly if you could tell us the context , i would be able to give u a much better response, however just as GEBR. I would say it either means Gebrueder which means brothers OR it is also used for GEBRAUCHT which means used... ;)
It is def not a abbreviation for a name , i know that for sure ....

Gebr. = Gebrüder, which means Bros. = Brothers in English

It might mean Geburtstag, which means "birthday" in German.
If this is an abbreviation you see on a form or application, or if it appears in biographical / obituarial material; then this would be my guess based on context.
