Looking at some of the answers, I just need to say that if you are going to exercise first thing in the morning, please have at least 50g of carbohydrate. By the time you wake up, you have exhausted nearly all your body's stores of carbohydrate energy. So guess what, you turn to other sources. Now in an ideal world, you would turn to fat burning. Unfortunately, you turn to burning up your own muscle protein (catabolic atrophy).
It doesn't matter when you exercise, but whatever you do, please remember the above information.

I think a lot of research points to the morning, as the best natural time for working out. In all reality, you may have a slightly greater calorie burn in the AM hours.
But to be realistic, not everyone gets to pack in a workout in the AM, between work, family, other committments.
I tend to have much better workouts in the evenings. The evening time allows you to come home relax for awhile, get in a meal or shake before. Plus, it allows you to burn off some of the stresses of work/daily life.

Really it depends on which is more convenient to you, and when you have the most energy. I have always chose mornings because that is when I am most energetic and I get it done and over with and not have to think about it all day.
